chevy 4.3 burning plug wire boots Sign In

1990 chevrolet c1500 4.3 tbi 110k
recently replaced motor w/ a 93 4.6
had a few bugs got those worked out, did a tune up, plugs, wires, cap, and button. bout three weeks goes by motor starts missing, pull over to check on it, the boot to the number 6 cyl. is burnt, put spare old one on ran fine for a few weeks then the same thing happens to the # 3 cyl. , so i buy some fiber mesh boot protectors, put them on ran fine for like three weeks, now the # 1 cyl. didn't burn but got hot enough to make the boot real soft and it makes it miss real bad, replace the wire with older one runs fine, but heats up the boot again after about 20 miles

4.3L? Does this have headers? What brand and part number plug wires did you use?

If it has exhaust manifolds, are the heat shields installed to the manifolds? #1 and #6 get the straight boots and the rest the 90 degree angles.

yeah 4.3 sorry i guess my truck didnt have the heat sheilds to begin with ill have to go to the pull it yard

Without those shields installed it will cook plug boots.

Another thing to make sure of is that your ignition timing is correct. If the timing is retarded enough it won't have complete combustion and cause the exhaust to get extremely hot. Unplug the bypass connector and check your base timing. Should be at 0 degrees.

bypass connector is the small 2 prong connector on the ignition control module, right?

Im not sure, but I believe the timing connector is near the distributor behind that black cover on the firewall. The connector will have tan/black wire.

NOTE: Timing specifications are listed on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under the hood. Always follow the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label procedures first before using the following procedure.

PROCEDURE:

Set timing under the following conditions:

  • Normal operating temperature.
  • Air cleaner installed.
  • A/C "OFF".
  • Transmission in neutral.
  • Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in harness close to distributor. DO NOT disconnect 4 wire connector at distributor.
Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distibuor For specification, refer to SPECIFICATIONS/ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC SPECIFICATIONS/TIMING SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten hold down and recheck the timing. Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector. Clear ECM trouble code by disconnecting ECM power source.

NOTE: Dual timing scribes are on the 4.3L engine balancers. They line up with the timing indicators at one o'clock and four o'clock positions. Use the one o'clock position.

ok there are three v's on the timing plate VVV which one is zero, guessing the middle?

Try some fine sandpaper or a small wire brush and maybe the marks will show. That or just count from the diagram that HT posted and paint that mark or "v" as you put it with even wite-out for paper so you can see it better and again mark balancer if that's not clear as well,

reset timing completely from scratch manually put it to tdc, lined up the timing mark on the scribe plate, made sure the dizzy was in correctly, cranked it with the timing control wire unhooked, was really retarded according to my light advanced it up to zero, unhooked the battery, put it all back, runs fine now, i think my problem was the second mark on the harmonic balancer was so close i kept trying to get the wrong mark lined up causing all the fuss, not real sure, or i may have caught a case of stupid for a minute.

Glad to hear it worked out. Also nice that what you said suggests you have an advance timing light - many don't as they were a lot more bucks. Useful to know how far timing goes off the chart of marks on vehicle to spec if you needed,
