1998 vw cabrio 4 cyl. 70k miles

makes terrible rhythmic clunking when driving, frequency of noise related to speed, not coming from engine, sound goes away when clutch is depressed, doesn't always make the noise, not related to turning, makes noise when driving straight, sounds like something is about to break
