digital speedometer quit working

3.3 V-6
This car has digital gauges and speedo. The speedometer stopped working and so did the odometer.The speedo always reads zero and the odometer does not move. The last time I parked it, everything was working fine, the next day these things started. When I start the car, all the gauges and speedometer cycle like they should. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

ok, I did the key dance and got codes 14 and 15. Would one of these be the culprit?

Unfortunately, no. Those codes deal with the ABS system.
This is where it starts getting more complicated.
Perform a cluster diagnostic check:
With the key off, press and hold the trip and trip/reset buttons at the same time. Turn the key on. The cluster should display "check". Press the US/metric switch. The cluster will then display trouble codes, if any, followed by a 999. 999 means end of codes. If there are no codes, 999 will be displayed only.

ok, just to double check the key dance, I did it again and this time it showed codes 15 and 35. I tried pushing trip and trip/reset together and turning the key on but "check" did not come on, just the normal display. The us/metric button had no effect.

I was re reading the code charts and it really doesn't list the number for the engine computer codes. They all concern ABS.
I went to a different source and the 15 code is vehicle speed sensor circuit and the 34 has to do with a fault in the cruise control system.
If the engine computer isn't getting the signal from the distance sensor that might explain why your speedo is inop. To determine what the fault is, you would have to see if the signal from the sensor is reaching the engine computer. It could be a problem with the sensor, something mechanical that drives the sensor, a wiring issue, or the engine computer itself( unlikely).
The sensor is located in the extension housing of the transaxle. You should first do a visual inspection of the sensor, connectors, and wiring. Make sure the terminals inside the connector aren't spread out.

I was looking for a replacement sensor and saw two different types, one is a input sensor and one is a output. Which one would I get?

Neither. The input and output speed sensors are used by the transmission control unit and are used to determine gear ratio.
The distance sensor is used by the ECM and has white/orange and black/light blue wires on its connector.
Are you going to troubleshoot or gamble and replace the sensor?

I'll check the connections and wiring and anything else that seems out of place first but will probably wind up buying a sensor if I can't find anything. Thank you again for all of your help.

If the wiring and connector looks good, there is another test you can do. Usually, you are supposed to use the DRB or high end scan tool to look at the VSS info, but you may be able to use the speedo.
One wire on the speed connector should have 4 or 5 volts. The sensor is a reed switch with 8 magnetic poles. Every time a magnet gets close enough the reed switch closes. When it is closed the 4 or 5 volts is pulled to ground. This creates a digital signal the engine computer uses to determine vehicle speed. You can act as the reed switch and use a piece of wire to bridge the two terminals in the connector together. You want to tap ( quickly) on one terminal while keeping the piece of wire on the other terminal, like your doing Morse code. What your doing is simulating the digital signal the sensor would generate. Someone else in the vehicle should see some sort of reaction of the speedometer when you do that with the ignition on.
If you see a reaction from the speedo, that means the wiring, ECM, and instrument cluster are good.
