electronics on 2002 VW Jetta Sign In

Frown
2002 VW Jetta - battery kept needing charging - had Auto Zone check it - battery ok, alternator needs replacing - when changing out, socket touched something and threw a spark - when done battery light came on- drove it to get it checked but car died - found flat fuse in box on top of battery had blown and melted part of fuse box - have whole new fuse box coming - without it battery light sort of blinks - when we put this new box on is there anything else we need to check before driving it?

Which engine? Always disconnect the battery when changing an alternator out or doing any work that has power on it with the ignition off.

Before you connect the battery, check to make sure that your alternator bat cable is good and not chaffing on anything which could cause the cable to be grounded.

Also be sure your bat cable terminal connection on the alternator isn't grounding out on any brackets or the case.

Down on the starter, I believe on the 2.8L, the alternator cable terminates. I've seen the starter bat cables terminal nut come loose and cause slow cranking and no charging. Be sure your cables are tight down at the starter motor too.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
