grandam radiator, gasket ... Sign In

The mechanic said my 2001 (with 107K miles) grand am se dex radiator coolant was mixing with the oil and the oil was leaking out of the intake seal and a little on the ground (both the oil and coolant looked cloudy/milk), so he replaced the intake gasket seal. Now, month later, the radiator overfill is empty and the coolant level in the radiator is low again. I refilled the coolant but it idles rough when Im at a stop lite and when parking the car and I can smell sumthing bad like sumthing is mixing. Theres nothing leaking onto the ground, and i dont see the clouding mixture, but I dont know where the coolant is going and what the smell and idling is from. The mechanic who did the job said I can drive it through the idling for the next few weeks til the next appt. The intake gasket was also replaced before in 2005 so im concerned, both times costing over $600. If there is any other information that would be helpful pls let me know and thx!

I wouldn’t take the chance in driving the vehicle with a known leak, no matter how small; let alone not knowing where it’s leaking from.
Even though you’re not seeing any mixing of coolant and oil it still could be an internal leak and coolant is being sucked into the combustion chamber; via another intake gasket failure or cylinder head gasket.
If by chance this does turn out too be the third intake gasket it would be time for the technician to take a very long close look at this intake for warpage and or the aluminum being pitted where the sealing surfaces mate.
