ERRRR!!! Someone ripped my ignition out in an attempt to steal my 01 durango. They broke the ring around the immobilizer.

The Stealer ship said if I bought a salvage column with immobilizer they would still have to replace the Immobilizer, because it was not programmed to my trucks computer.

$150 for the immobilizer $75 reprogram the new one and $200 for a salvage column $50 rekey the tumbler.

Total $600 after towing and taxes. Not to mention it would take one to two weeks to find the column and do the work.

After researching I found out the memory chip in the immobilizer has a pin # special to the vehicle.

Long story short, I took the circuit board from the broke casing and swapped it with the casing from the salvage yard column. I also made the tumbler work with my old key.
Total$150

I think that was a good idea and very resourceful for DIY.

I did not run around to different junkyards. I only went to one. It was the stealership that tried to make it sound harder than it really was.

As for the insurance, we only have liability insurance and cannot afford full coverage. Even if we had, changing it myself was equal to or cheaper then then deductible. Also, my rates will not go up.

I posted my story to help other people in the same position as my self.

It is amazing what a person can do out of necessity.
We really did not have $600+ to shell out to the stealership. I started to just change the column and ask a locksmith to program it, He wanted a $100, which I think is fair, but could not guarantee it would work. The stealership would do it for $230.
It was either buy groceries or pay to have it fixed. Glad I bought that soldering iron 2 yrs ago. It is the first time i have used it
