Timing has to be set way back(20-30 degrees) to not spark knock. Has unknowinlgy been this way for several years. Set timing closer to correct and this made spark knock work. Any ideas or suggestions???

If this is a carbureted engine you have to disconnect the vacuum advance before checking timing. If the engine is injected; you have to disconnect, what is called the spout. By doing so you are taking timing control away from the computer; leaving at base for adjustment sake. You’ll find the spout close to the distributor’s ignition module’s wiring harness. It’s a two wire connector cropping out of the harness. Here’s what one looks like If you have already done this then, maybe check that the balancer (timing maker) hasn’t spun showing you a false TDC mark? Pull #1 plug bring the piston up to the top of its travel and see if the TDC or zero mark still lines up. Dan Canadian "EH"
