Hello, going to try and follow way2old's advice here. 1999 toyota 4 runner 79,800 miles manual transmission v6 4wd approx 1 year ago my wife was driving and the car intermittently lost power for a few kilometers and then stalled completely and wouldn't restart. diagnosis was fuel pump and it was replaced, along with a rusted out gas tank. last night (we live in germany) i was driving to base 40 to 60 miles and hour, in 3rd or 4th gear, and 2 or 3 times the car intermittently completely lost power. it seemed like the clutch was just engaged suddenly. the car did not stall, it just went to idle (at least that's what it seemed like and i'm pretty sure the rpms were around 1000 - idle, right?) otherwise the car was driving fine - no noises or other signs of problems. power was fine except for these couple moments, each lasting no more than 5 seconds. on returning home, the car started fine. idled fine. but the same thing occured, maybe 4 or 5 times. I may just be psycho, but it seemed like it was occuring more often. i drifted in neutral when i could, b/c i needed to get home so my wife didnt' have to wake the 2 kids to come pick me up. anyway, i can't get it into the base shop or the local toyota dealer for 2 weeks. arghh! so, i was wondering if anyone had any advice on my next move. oh, also. i was deployed to iraq and the car sat. i filled the engine all the way up and used fuel stabilizer. i super pressurized the tires and brought them back to normal when i returned. i unhooked the battery while gone. when i returned the car started right up and drove fine. i had the engine oil and filter replaced a month ago. otherwise nothing else special to report. the car really has been driving fine. i have little auto skills. i am in the medical field. i can follow directions quite well though. i may be able to get the car into another mechanic shop if i call around, but i figured i'd see what some online experts thought. thanks for any help you can provide me, tafontaine

Hmmm? The rusted fuel tank from back when may still have plugged up more than a fuel filter. Guessing of course, but a new fuel filter, inspection of fuel pickup screen for trouble may be the problem. A fuel pressure test may show ok at idle and not up to par under load with fuel flow restricted. This is also somewhat in line with plugged cat converts but not so sure just yet on that. Perhaps if a fuel problem some solvent might buy you some time or help but if clogged it should be cleaned and fixed properly. Fav for solvents is Chevron's Techron if they sell it there or try some injector cleaner which that is of any type. Good luck, T
