I am considering purchasing a 1998 Jaquar XJ8. The only issue I have found is that the car tried to heat up a bit during the test drive and I also noticed a dark deposit on the oil stick above the oil level?? Should I be concerned??

Re: jaquar Sign In

That could be a warning of sludge which is not good!! Take a look under the oil filler cap and even better take a valve cover off and really look.

It's tough to say for every used car what it's history is. These cars are expensive to repair so you really should investigate.

Trick: Pull the dipstick up with engine idling. Take a cigarette and hold it at the dipstick tube and the smoke should get sucked down the tube. It's not conclusive but if that works the engine should be ok. Again -- NOT conclusive and may not apply to every engine out there but that has never failed me. You could do that with a vacuum gauge too and should show some vacuum, T
