David; I don't want to jump to conclusions, but sounds like you may have a fuel pump going 'south' on you. If you have a fuel pressure guage, connect it before attempting to start. These engines require 55 psi. just to start. Before you replace it, check the fuel filter. A partially plugged filter can burn up a pump. A trick...When you turn the ignition to the ON position, the fuel pump will run for a few seconds. Turn the key OFF. Wait a few seconds, do it again. Turn it back off, then after a few seconds, try starting it. Each time you cycle the ignition like this, you'll build fuel pressure. After about three cycles, it should be near normal.
With that said, there are other causes...fuel pressure bleeding back to the tank, causing the pump to have to prime each time...fuel bleeding into the engine, causing a flooding condition. In all of these cases, a pressure guage will tell you what's going on. If it turns out to be the pump, use only an OE GM pump. And, replace the filter, regardless. NAPA and CAR QUEST both sell the OE GM pumps, usually cheaper than going to the dealer.
