merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

2000 Grand marquis 75,000 miI have been noticing that sometimes when I turn my wheel to the right (when I am pulling away from the curb), there's a click or snapping type sound coming from the front driver's side. It seems like it may be around the wheel. Anyway, I called the mechanic and he said it may be a cv axle or a bearing. However, naturally it has to be seen to be sure. The problem is that he is booked up for 2 weeks. Do you think it would be okay to wait that long? It's driving okay so far but I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination! Help!

Do you have the wheels turned all the way to one side when this happens?

This could just be the suspension rubbing on the dry stops. A dab of grease on the contact area would stop that.

The symptoms of a bad axle would be repeating clicking upon hard acceleration around a corner.

? RWD right? No CV for the front. Hub bearing, brake splash plate bent, possible brake issue or as Hammer said there's stop to grease. Suggestion - if you keep turning into those you are about to waste the power steering. If that's even shiny there quit that the end is the end back off,

Most of the time it just seems to do it when I turn the wheel to the right as I'm pulling away from the curb. There is no hard turning to the right when it does this. It's strange I know! Crazy

Then you could have a bad control arm bushing or something. Definitely not an axle. It needs to be inspected.

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

That era of Merc's were real good for the lower BJs getting dry/rusted due to being none serviceable and making squeeking/cracking noises on turns. Eventually they will break....which makes them very easy to diagnose after that happens. Wink
Sometimes the tie rod ends would do the same, but more times than not it was a BJ.
As Tom already point out, this is a RWD car, so there isn't any frt axles.

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

Hi again!I took the car to the shop and they say that everything basically looks all right, but there is quite a bit of play in the idler arm. He mentioned something about some play on the other side (something about a pinion?). He says the problem is not dangerous so I have time to save up some money to pay for the repair plus a front-end alignment. He suggested as long as 6 months. The overall cost would be $379.00. I hope that he is right b/c I need to pay off another bill before making the repair. Thanks for all of your feedback everyone!

I've never seen an Idler arm cause that noise but have seen a couple of Pitman arms do that, that is probably what he is talking about.

Once the linkage/BJs start make those noises, usually you have some time before it's gets dangerous and something breaks.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Well, I hope he knew whatever it was he was talking about! he wasn't the actual mechanic as far as I know he just manages the shop. he did show me a diagram while explaining what he was saying. Of course, I know NOTHING, but listened to what he said! It is hard being so ignorant about cars! Anyway, I'll just have to hope for the best in the meantime! Now I do know that he said the bjs are in fine shape! Whew! Thanks for your input!jl

You really should get a second opinion. Too many of those tire and front end shop are in sales mode and not diagnostic. The idler arm is the most singled out component for a quick sale but I really doubt he actually looked for your problem. Go to a different shop, preferably not a chain store and don't tell them what the other one said.

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

Just wanted to check in to say that I am getting another opinion on Wednesday! Since the hurricane back in October (I live in Panama City, FL) there has been a shortage of mechanics and other workers. So this is why it is taking me so long to get in to see them at that shop! But I googled the shop and it has 4.9 out of 5 stars for satisfaction! I had never been to it until I went to make me an appt. and it took quite a while! I will post whenever I get his diagnosis. I really feel that they are honest since the reviews are so good, but how I regret not having one of you guys to check out my car! I can tell that you really ARE honest and care about people and their cars! Thank you all!

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

Well, I took it to the shop and the car would not make that sound for the mechanic! ARGHHH! Anyway, they said that one of the stabilizer links/bushing was completely worn out and needed replacing. So I had them do the job. Since the car didn't necessarily make the noise every time I drove it, I will have to wait and see if this took care of the problem or not. They told me the car needs an alignment since it pulls to the right when driving. They don't do alignments there. Could that have anything to do with the noise it made? any ideas? And I do feel they are an honest shop. When you let go of the steering wheel, the car automatically sways to the right.Btw, I did not tell them, as you advised, when the other shop had said about there was loose play in the idler arm. This shop said nothing about seeing such a thing. Sigh...I am so clueless! Thanks everybody!

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

? Sway bar pins are somewhat common so no big deal there. The common types you get a clunk or whack at assorted times if busted off but could also wear out rubber and be very intermittent.
Understand all places do NOT do alignments but if in biz usually have a place they use I guess that might be just around me?
If an idler arm had any motion (hope they know how to check those) why didn't they do it or suggest doing it now or soon before alignment? It can't be properly aligned with a bad one should be found and many alignment places would just do those if the only thing wrong with alignment/front end suspension and steering parts.
Just FYI many items that are worn beyond limits can be and doesn't make a car "pull" to one side or another - just know that.

Try to be concise but plain tire pressure, tire wear uneven or different types/brands could do that on a list of reasons. Idler arm shouldn't make a car pull but has to be right - no free-play allowed in those.
This is giving you more grief than it should IMO but you are reporting what was done so far still confused why they didn't want the work if found?

I drove the car today and it is STILL making the same noise! The wheels are turned to the right as I pull away from the curb and the noise happens. I notice that it happens most often after the car has sat for a while, especially when I drive it for the first time! I have to give the mechanic credit, as he did take the car for a drive as I rode along and he did everything trying to get the noise to happen! But no such luck! Now I am at my wits end as to what to do! Replacing the worn-out bushing did not correct the problem at all! If I take it back to this mechanic, I will probably have to wait 10 days to 2 weeks to get it in and if he can't hear the noise, his hands seem to be tied! So what can I do?! Thanks everybody!jl

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

OK: Perhaps since this is playing hide-and-seek with some things found probably no problem and good to fix worn rubber bushings and did find the idler arm off still confuses me time for another tech or person if only for a better look based on YOUR description so if it isn't going to make a noise (that stinks when all things seem right) also tell of the car pulling to one side.

A second look and hope you can go with someone again like that.

It's really not up to you or a customer to be the tech or do the diagnosis but sure helps if the usual driver/owner can say what and when it happens get clues to find it or more than one thing.

A good alignment shop that specializes in just that should also do assorted work anything about suspension and steering. Even better if they can show you just what or where and stop this goose chase if you will.

If it's a specific road that makes it happen GO THERE and repeat the issue if noise alone is necessary to hear at all to find this.

It's going to or I suggest the alignment anyway those shops and tech(s) should do one unless the vehicle is totally ready to do that.

I don't want to confuse YOU anymore so suggesting find the right person and place if only for diagnosis that will take this seriously. It's not the most difficult design type rather the opposite more traditional concepts of how vehicles have been made for freaking ages on end - really.

This is a chassis car meaning body sits on rubber had a FRAME under the body not one welded unit so those isolators can even make noise. Was (well I did and do) lubed those just light lube with some use and time are sqeaky on their own sometimes.

That enough - find another set of eyes and ears of places to look and let them do their thing to find this. Then when found what to about it and what it should cost this has gone all backwards and sideways just nailing down the problem for lack of time spent to understand it mostly in person and I'm not blaming anyone - yet??

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

Okay, so I've made an appt. with another shop on Friday morning. He said that he will give the car an alignment and if anything's not right, he'll be able to fix it with my permission.. He thought the previous shop that replaced the stabilizer link/bushing should have replaced the whole control arm with the bushing...or something like that! It's hard to remember words that are unfamiliar to me, so I hope I'm not screwing up what he actually said! I would never want to misrepresent someone! Anyways, I'll post on here as soon as I can. I let him know that no one else has been able to diagnose it. So maybe he is up to the challenge! Thanks all!jl

Re: merc marquis cv axle or bearing or ...? Sign In

Now THAT sounds a lot better! Yes, many would suggest all rubber bushings for a stabilizer bar. Glad this place/person said yes will also check and fix more WITH your approval with a price should be in order IF ANYTHING MORE FOUND.
That's now how you do biz.
Sounds right on target just please tell us that it all came out right and that it's behaving as you like with a printout showing you that it's in specifications listed and be done with this chapter could have been the first stop things didn't work out I can smell that already,

Thanks, Tom! I hope it works out okay. It's been really frustrating! Funny thing is, the last shop had a 4.9 out of 5 rating on Google reviews whereas the shop I'm taking it to Friday only has a 3.8 out of 5 rating! I hope I can get some satisfaction so I can up their rating! Will post the outcome as soon as I can! Thank you again!jl
