I just bought a '63 Merc. monterey. It has some problems as it has sat for a few years. The problem is that when I start it, it dies once I hit the gas. I love this car and want to drive it around for fun, the problem is that I don't have that much experience w/ working on cars other than basic maintenance. I'm very willing to learn and work but I just don't know how to get started. Any suggestions for a newbie?

Sounds like an accellerator pump which would be part of a carb kit and they don't last forever and it's just a plunger type thing and hard to get at so just do a whole carb kit and check the floats which should be brass and if they have fuel in them that will be a problem -- give them a shake or weight them if you can find the specs. Good luck, Love older cars, T PS: My gray hair was earned and these were cars I dealt with back when...........
