i have a 1972 ford f-250, with a 360 v8 2bar carb with about 61.000 miles. the trouble i am having is as follows. i bought a re-built carb, the same kind that was on the truck new. i put that carb on the truck and it ran fine for about 60 days or so. I went to start it again and it would not start. It would tour over fine but just would not start. I gave it a little starting fluid it ran for about 4 seconds and then just crank. I do have gas in the tank, I do have gas to the fuel pump, I do have gas from the fuel pump to the carb but I dont have any gas going into the carb. any ideas?

I took off the fuel line from the carb and turned the engine over and gas was pumping from the that fuel line. I know the trouble is with the carb but I dont know that much about carbs, I was thinking that maybe a float is stuck

You may have to remove the top of the carb and take a look at that float and needle to see what is going on. Just be be careful and don't drop any screws down into the intake. Maybe you got some trash inside the carb. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Seems like fuel pump gave up on you so far. Should be easy and cheap on side of the engine but first. Take fuel line off after filter in line or might screw into carb. Crank engine and catch fuel just a few seconds should be enough for fill a catch can and bet you get none or very little. Pressure should be about 4-6 PSI or so and not fussy but that area. Pumps are just riding the camshaft with a lever that goes up and down to it. Within it, it will allow fuel in but not back to tank and on to carb but not back unseen inside it. When carb bowl needs more fuel it lets it out to level set by float and thru a needle valve that shuts it off when full enough. Those needle valve could stick shut but more often open and spill fuel out of carb but doubt the case. DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE ON THE SCREW IN FILTERS TO CARBS AS THE THREADS ARE NOT THE SEAL! If you did it's hell to clean out of carb up to hopeless! So if no fuel pumps thru pump it just needs a new one. Trick to make it easier. Undo any hard line at least to finger ability first and be ready to undo the other should be rubber hose and clamp. Replace that stretch of rubber with correct fuel line at this job. Loosen the pump just enough so it can break gasket and wobble by hand and turn engine till it wobbles freely either by fast clicks from the ignition or turn engine by crank bolt. It will work no matter but installation easier if you do that. Clean off gasket but don't allow any scrapings into the engine as that's the crankcase so don't allow it. Your call to grease a new gasket so it will never stick again or not or just some plain engine oil on paper ones. Put the thing back on, fasten lines and check for flow again as already said or just go. Might take several cranks if float bowl is empty or stall once or twice then work fine. Make sure choke really snaps to shut also when cold with just a pull on throttle or hit on gas pedal. If not it will not want to start and another issue to tend to but with a prime as you already did it should stay running this time if all went properly. Good luck, T

DS hit quick while I was typing. Some if needle stuck in carb you could just tap on carb with PLASTIC hammer with NO fuel present or making sparks or hurting carb and that would do if it is just that. Taking top off isn't that hard on those either if needed, T

Thank you for the info. I did buy a new fuel pump and put it on yesterday, since the other one was 42 years old. It still would not start, It would turn over but would not start. I look inside the carb and when I gave it gas I could not see any gas spraying into the body of the carb.

You won't see "accelerator" pump any fuel until carb has fuel in it. It apparently can't get in either past filter if as said or a stuck needle valve as DS said. No harm in a new fuel pump on these at all IMO if known that old! Rebuilt carbs are not always so perfect and the top if newer should just come off without wrecking the top gasket. You can mess this all up but once top is off float should just lift out with needle valve attached and just set back down and be over with this if that's right where and what is going on. If you get there just look at tip of needed valve to see if somehow it's messed up - shouldn't be. With gas line off and needle valve out you should be able to spray carb cleaner back out thru fuel inlet. If that's all messed up with that Teflon white tape it just might have been so excessive it would clog but never saw anyone use that much and again NONE should be used. Something you may want to try first is this............... Get a can with a couple gallons of gas in it and get a 5 foot piece of rubber fuel line. Connect one end of the hose to the fuel pump suction side and the other end submerged into the gas can and try to start it. Keep the can of gas elevated above the fuel pump. If it runs this way, then the problem is in your fuel tank or fuel lines. You have to understand how these pumps work. Mechanical pumps pull fuel while electric pumps push fuel. What commonly happens is the fuel lines rust out but they don't leak because of the suction.
