i have a 1993 hyundai lantra GL 1.6 engine, its done about 220,000 k's. when running the car, the temp gauge is at normal level, but after about a minute of running, the gauge very suddenly jumps to hot, right at the limit of the scale. turn off the car and leave the car for a couple of mins, and the temp gauge will be back to nomal, then after a few minutes jump right back up to hot. this still happens when the engine is not running; if i just turn the ignition lights on but not turn the engine on, the temp gauge is at normal levell, and after a minute or so the gauge will go to hot! im not sure what is happening, as the car is not overheating (i think), when the gauge is on hot, i can feel the engine itself is cold, i can take of the radiator cap and stick my finger in and the coolant is also cold, dispite wat the gauge says. there is no smoke, or any liquids pissing out of anywhere that i can see. there is plenty of engine oil, there is plenty of coolant, and the fan works and comes on. someone suggested the thermistat and i have replaced this. what do you suggest could be the problem? and how can it b fixed? could it be the Coolant Temperature Sender? thanks in advance lewis

lewis; From your symptoms, I would have to agree that it's either a guage or a sending unit problem. Your car will have two temp. sending units. One, for the computer, for fuel delivery (two wire) and one for actual engine temp for the guage (usually, single wire). Now, with that said, it is possible that the engine can be hot, but the radiator cold. If the thermostat is faulty, or installed incorrectly, can cause the overheating. Loren SW Washington
