oxygen sensor Sign In

1998 ford windstar 3.8l 144,000. feeling slight stumble or missfire at constant speeds. did tune up, plugs wires, tested coil pack and put injector cleaner in gas tank. still there.
my ride has three oxygen sensors. one off front bank and one off back bank. the third one is after the converter on the front bank. none after the back bank converter. not sure why.
i removed the one after the converter and it is black but does not make noise when shaken. but when i removed the back bank sensor and shake it there is a rattle like a burned out light bulb. also when i did the tune up the back plugs were black in spots with dusty looking carbon. the front bank plugs looked to have a little white build up but clean.
does rattle mean to replace?

Re: oxygen sensor Sign In

O2 sensors are not cheap....if one of the sensors was defective the pcm would likely come up as a trouble code, a little rust inside could be the rattle, but if youre in dout....replace it.
