I recently had to replace my speed sensor on my 1998 mercury V-6 sable and that took care of the speedometer and the transmission not shifting problem.Unfortunately I damage the wires on the top oxygen sensor firewall side and I had to replace it.Everything work fine for 4 days then the service light came on and a code PO135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1) and I think that is the same one I replaced.That sensor is next to the speed sensor and there is no room at all and when you are fighting installing that y-pipe exhaust it is very difficult not to nick those wires.My questions are:Is Bank 1 Sensor 1 the top sensor on the firewall side? Is there a way to check the wiring at the plug with my fluke meter?Also has anybody have any experience replacing that type of close fitting O2 sensor,I would like to see if there a easier and safe way to do this with out pulling of that stupid y-pipe and possibly nicking the wires again?

bank 1 i believe is the drivers side. so bank 1 sensor 1 would be on the drivers side in between the exhaust manifold and cat converter

Thanks for your reply dmac0923,and I agree bank 1 sensor 1 is the top sensor but I have a DOHC V-6 and someone else said it was the firewall side but I'm not sure.

Bank 1 is the bank that contains the number 1 cylinder,sensor 1 is the sensor before the cat/con.
I believe the #1 cylinder is the bank closest to the firewall on this model.

Dear O2,
Sad to say, there is a failure rate on O2 sensors. I had a quality one (from Napa) put in and it failed 100 miles later. They made it good, but I was in the middle of nowhere in WV mtns. when it went again. Yeah. You may not have nicked the wire, it could have just failed. I don't know if it would help on your model, but an experienced Plymouth mechanic told me that if you floor it and it runs fine, it is probably not the o2 sensor, since the computer ignores it under full acceleration. Maybe Jim could tell you more. He is a helpful guy for sure.
