Been searching for the directions most of the day on how to replace a water pump on a 2001 Alero. Some sites have mentioned taking off the timing cover and balancer? The car is my girlfriends, I know it's a 6 cyl but not for sure on the size have not looked at it yet. If I remember rights it said 3400 or 2400 on the upper intake. If anyone could provide a link I would appreciate it. Thank you
...back to searching :)

Did some searching myself. The only V6 is the 3.4. Didn't find a good pic but it looks like an easy water pump. Take a good look. It does not have hoses going right to it as some do. It probably just mounts to the timing cover with a few bolts. Just look hard at it and look at a new replacement and it may become obvious to you,

If this is a 3.4Lt engine it’s a fairly easy job.
 Drain the cooling system.
 Loosen the water pump’s pulley’s four bolts
 Remove the serpentine belt
 Remove water pump pulley’s bolts
 Remove pulley
 Remove water pump retaining bolts
 Remove water pump
 Clean gasket surface
 To install reverse, removal procedure
 Refill cooling system
 Bleed air from system
 Run engine until thermostat has opened & cooling fan has cycled on & off.
Note:
Make note of locator tab on water pump housing at the 12 O clock position for installation reference.
In the second step it says to loosen pulley’s bolts, that’s so the belt will help you hold the pulley still, while you’re trying to loosen the bolts. You may still have to jam the pulley with a screwdriver too break the bolts free.
During the refill and initial running of the engine, you’re going too want to open any of the bleeder screws that may be there. If there are any bleeders, you’ll find one at a metal tee junction close to the water pump and another on the thermostat housing.

The only diagram I could find; is of the timing cover; showing where the pump would be but its (pump) not shown on the diagram

Dan.

WAY TO GO DAN!! That's the one I thought it was - easy as they go. Did one of those in a lady's driveway several years ago - she was calling to get it towed to my shop and I said stop - there was a parts store nearby and I had it done before she could have had it towed!!

This was the easiest water pump I ever replaced. 9 very easy to get to bolts. 4 for the pully and 5 for the pump itself. The hardest part was scraping off the old gasket :) Thanks again for everyones help. This is a great site.

Hey.
If I take my car into a repair shop to have my 2001 Alero's water pump fixed, how much will I be looking to pay?

pepper; Assuming it is the 3.4L V6, about $60. for the pump, and about 1.5 hrs. labor. Don't forget new coolant. If it is the 4 cylinder engine, apply for a second mortgage.Wink

Hi Loren,
Thank you for your help, much appreciated! Last summer a body man told me it was the head gasket. So far by not letting it even get near to over heating and keeping coolant in it (and many, MANY prayers...:o), this baby girl is hanging in there. Anyway, had another guy look at it Sunday and he said no about the head gasket and yes on the water pump (he is an actual mechanic, not a body man). Haven't gotten a quote from him yet as he said he wanted to check out prices first. He wants to do it as a side job.

Whew. Anyway, can you tell me where else to look to FOR SURE find out what it is engine wise? I think it's a v6, but not positive. Looked all over the engine and inside hood and on the inside of drivers door panel and just don't see it. But it does say 2.4L Twin Cam on an object on top under the hood. It just doesn't exactly say V6 or V4, or 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder. ????? Also checked on outside of car and in owners manual and nothing that I can see gives me a positive answer. Called a local repair shop and they quoted me $197, with tax, labor, parts and coolant (IF it's a v6).

(I haven't been able to fix it because I was laid off at same time this started going south, but now 'think' I may be able to. Depending of course on what's exactly wrong and the price)

Thanks again for any help! Have a Happy New Year! I'll try not to be so long winded next time..:o)

Second mortgage is right if it's the 4 cyl, which that is what it is looking like. Mounts from behind, firewall side of engine. If you are not experienced, I advise subcontracting. PITA- Took lots of beer.

CH is right. The 2.4 is the four cylinder. The book calls for about 5.5 hrs. labor. Ouch. Sorry.

Thanks very much Chickenhouse & Loren:
Dang it! Grrrrrr! Talked to the body man a while ago to ask what 'v' it was and he said it was a v6. Thanks for letting me know different, I appreciate your help. (Had to google 'PITA', didn't know what that was. Guess I would have if I knew about cars...:o)
Thanks again guys....:o)

First I just googled PITA and it brought up: Pita Jungle menu, Pita bread recipe, etc. Had a good feeling THAT wasn't what you meant...:o)

Then googled "What is P.I.T.A.?". First option was, "So now you know - PITA means "Pain In The @$$".
3rd option was, "Are you a P.I.T.A.?" The first option was good enough for me! LOL Wink

Guess so! The mechanic called me back a few mins ago & gave me a quote for approx $300.00 (he said 'maybe' less). Said that would cover $170.00 in parts: Water pump, 2 gasket plates for the cover, antifreeze, misc parts and of course labor. And yes, he verified also that it is a 4 cyl. Now I know...:o) He'll fix it this weekend and I'll sure be glad when it's over. Thanks again you guys for your help. Please have a Safe, Happy and Prosperous New Year! God Bless! Wink

Yep, kinda wondering about that as well as I called 6 other actual repair shops today and the quotes were:
$278 - (3 year warranty), $609 - (3 month/3,000 miles), $490 -(12 month/12,000 miles) and so on. Do I hear my head a swimmin'?...Crazy Soooooooo, I'm praying it will all work out. One way or another, I'll be ok. God is good to me. Thanks for expressing the concern though. I'll let ya know the final out come, hope it isn't a big Ouchie! Smile Thanks for the New Year wishes!

I have a suspicion my water pump is bad, I cannot pinpoint my leak, I checked the hoses around radiator and they all seemed ok.

As I am driving I get intermittent squealing from the serpentine belt, and my coolant levels are dropping quite often the last few days. I have the v6, what is the best way for me to confirm or deny that the water pump is the culprit? I have tinkered here and there with minor repairs, but my Alero now has 291,000 miles on it and I do not want to drop too much more cash into as a new vehicle is certainly in my near future...

Thanks!
