shut down on the highway

my car is 2001 mitsubishi montero, today I cannot start the car and try to jump it but didn't work. then I bring batter to autozone to charge it and put battery back, I can start the car. Then I plan to drive to highway to test and recharge the battery, the light shut down in 2 mintues and totally shut down on the highway! no powersteering, no hight light. What is wrong with the vihicle? is that the problem of alternater? Thank you.

For now see if alternator is putting out voltage higher then when engine off. Should maintain higher than about 13.5V or a bit more and if not it probably won't run when battery runs down and that doesn't take long sometimes.
Is belt properly tight enough?

Charge or jump the battery. With the engine running disconnect the positive battery cable. If the engine stops, you have a charging problem.... then refer to the previous post. Hope this helps.
