start up probs with Intrepid SE Sign In

I purchased a 2001 Intrepid Se less than a year ago,and pretty much, no problems. The only strange thing that's been going on is that 3 times now, within the last 7 months since I purchased the car,it wouldn't start. No crank, no nosie, nothing. The first time it happened, it was just sitting over night, & I got into it for work in the morning, & it didn't start. Went back inside for about 10 min or so & it started up fine. 2nd time, I was on the road, long distance, stopped at a rest stop.(no problems with start up probs in awhile), & when I got back into the car.... wouldn't start. No cranking noise, no nothing. Found someone to jump me, & it was fine again. Took it into the shop, & the mechanics couldn't find a thing wrong. Said it could be anything, but if it's not doing it when it's brought in, they couldn't begin to guess. Their checks showed everything was OK.
Just the other day, after about 4 or 5 months without any problems, I went to start the car, after it sitting for about 2 days, & nothing again. I went inside, & then decided to try something... I tried to start it in NEUTRAL & Bingo! started right up!
I don't know what's going on, as I said, it's been running like a charm otherwise. I just don't want to get stuck somewhere, sometime, where it won't start up period..... Any thoughts??Unsure

There's two things going on here. If your battery is original it's time for a new one. If neutral makes the car start then the "Neutral Safety Switch" needs looking at adjusted or replaced, - T

Was putting it in neutral just a coincidence that it started or if you where to have kept trying in park would it have started? No one can say for sure but it just may have; like the time you left the car for ten minutes and then it started.
I’m not saying this is a for sure fix but I would put a starter in it. I’ve seen this same problem a number of times that a starter will have a dead spot in the armature and if the starter stops spinning the last time it was used on this dead spot it will not crank. After a number of tries the starter will nudge itself off the dead spot and then crank normally and in your case weeks on end.
You have to start somewhere if you want to fix this thing and at times you have to throw the dice in the hopes that you win.
Dan.
