timing chain problem follow-up

For my 1984 trans am 305. I have both alignment markers there however, the number one piston is not at the top and the rotor on the distributor is not on the number one spark plug wire. how much of this does not matter?

Actually, the rotor will be pointing to #6 on the cap when you have the gears lined up. 180 degrees from TDC.

As Loren stated. The rotor should point to number 6 on the cap. The alignment dots should be placed at 12 o'clock on the crank gear and 6 o'clock on the cam gear with number 1 cylinder at top dead center. In other words, place number 1 cylinder at top dead center, line up the gears dot to dot and place the distreibutor at the number 6 poaition. Rotate engine one revolution and the dots should be top and top. If it is, rotor will be pointing at number 1.

Could it be that there are two marks on the crank gear; a triangle and a dot?
Some after market gears did have two marks; this was too degree the cam; for performance (super or turbo charging) applications.
Looking at the crank gear, the keyway should be at approx 11 o’clock.
If you’re still not sure; remove #1 plug and check TDC with the use of a screwdriver down the hole as you rotate the crank. Being careful; turning the crank slowly as to not get the screwdriver jammed.

A side note
This is not meant to belittle your knowledge but #1 is on the left (drivers) side.
