toyota 4runner smells like gas

okay. ive got a 94 toyota 4runner with about 136k on it. for a while now the exhaust has really been smelling like gas when i start it up and while i'm driving it. i changed the spark plugs and the air filter but nothing changed. got any ideas of what it could be? thanks, chuck

Guess: Check all lines that hold fuel. If the smell is only out the tailpipe you really wouldn't smell it in the car while driving so I think this is a fuel leak, T

thanks for your answer. here's the thing. i can only smell gas while i'm in the car when the rear windshield is down and the exhaust can get in. so i am pretty sure it's coming from the exhaust.

Is it running well? Still check all things that hold fuel - even the gas cap. If it really is very rich with a raw gas smell out the tailpipe it wouldn't be running well, a check engine light should be on. It doesn't take much raw gas to make an odor and may not drip. Trouble spots could be any connections in lines, fuel filter, lines for vapor recovery, etc., T

check your fuel pressure line and the fuel pump bracket on top of the tank. the bracket is a common problem in the northern states

MIGHT BE THE O2 SENSOR AS IT MIGHT BE GIVING IT TO MUCH GAS
