In my car manual, it refers to "earlier" and "latter" What is earlier? a 1980 or 1990? Which is latter. a 1980 or 1990? Trying to work on my car so your answer would be appreciated.

Earlier would be 1980, later would be 1990

When they say something like that, they are usually referring to early production and late production within the same model year. That happens when they make a change in parts in the middle of a model year to correct a defect.
