i cannot figure out how to release the belt tensioner on my 2002 vw golf. there is a metal rod protruding from it but i cannot figure out how to move it to release the tensioner. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it look like this? I think that's an engine side view but doesn't matter as it appears that the square protruding tooth is what you would release it with. Snug fitting proper open end wrench or perhaps an adjustable would fit in there. If that thing is pointing where you can't get at it with common tools you may need a special one for this. In a kit that could be rentable or looks like an open end crow foot socket and flex handle would do it if so but I bet you don't have cool stuff like that hanging around and I don't blame you!
