can you not change the bearings out in a hub bearing assembly on a 2002 ford explorer instead of having to replace the whole assembly

Timken / Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly-Front
Warranty - 1 YR SP470200 $185.99 Note: 5 stud hub

I only checked for the common 4WD Explorer and that is an assembly and not servicable separately. Only types that list "inner" or "outer" would be available to do separately,

Same part number. The bearings are not servicable. It is replaced as a unit. Somewhere you may be able to find a bearing that will match for a replacement, but the time and effort would not be worth the hassle.
