You had a bang noise, smoke everywhere. That showed you had a problem. I see no mention here that the hood was even opened to look for trouble. But you drove it home anyway. Then you drove it knowing you had a problem for DAYS without bothering to check a single fluid. Low and behold you've been driving this with almost no oil in it. The thing this car needs most in my opinion is a new driver. Its common sense that you check your fluids. Its common sense that if you hear a big bang noise and get a bunch of smoke you stop driving it completely until you can find out why it happened. If you aren't knowledgeable enough to find that cause you pay someone who is or it will cost you a lot of money. Take it to the nearest competent shop and have them diagnose the problem. As neglected as this car is you likely have done engine damage and probably have other issues with this that have been ignored. It may cost more to repair it now than it would've had it been treated properly. I can't tell you the extent of the damage without seeing it but you may have permanently damaged your engine. You've definately shortened its life.

That's like going for a job interview. Your nervous and crap your pants right as you enter the building. Then you go, "What the heck", and walk into the office for your interview. Then you walk out and wonder why you didn't get the job. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Age is no excuse for ignorance either. I started driving when I was 14 and I already knew how to check all my fluids by then. I rebuilt my first engine when I was still in my teens. Choosing to be ignorant is your fault. By the way, the little red and amber warning lights that pop up on the dash are called idiot lights, and it seems for good reason. I'd invest in a good pair of shoes. Walking everywhere is in your future if you continue to treat cars like this.

Ok....since this is your 1st car, I'll offer a bit of advise.... 1st the lights Nick has already touched on.....If it's red this mean immediate attention, right now, Your oil pressure, coolant temp even seat belt & door ajar lights are red. The vehicle really shouldn't move with these on (provided they are working correctly) With oil & coolant, without out either of those you could ruin your engine in a matter of miles.....I've seen it too many times... Amber lights mean ....As soon as possible, you don't have to pull over & tow it but it needs to be checked out VERY soon. These are you check engine, Air bag & fuel lights.....One side note if the the check engine is flashing, thats & upgrade to red, it needs imediate attention.... Just do the basics, check your oil & coolant when it's cold, keep air in the tires and when some big noise or thing happens that you don't know what it is.....Get someone to look at....Anyone with experience....Just to make sure that next drive isn't going to ruin your car.... That is all that these guys are touching on here......Each of us could tell you dozens of stories of teary eyed customers that just ruinged their engines by continuing to drive them when there was a problem...and if you had no feelings and just didn't give a damn, then it would be no big deal. but when you have some single mom crying in your bay becuase she blew a $20 hose, kept driving the car and ruined a $3000 engine and now she doesn't know how shes getting to work or picking up her kids...You do feel bad but there is nothing you can do now.... So if some of the attitudes seem a little jaded....I'm sure they are from people creating huge problems out of little ones, then laying on you and there isn't anything you can do to help

When that hose blew, all the coolant went with it. Without coolant, your engine was overheating. It may not have shown it on the gauge because the gauge is supposed to be immersed in fluid and instead it was in air. Air doesn't conduct heat nearly as well. You were running way too hot and likely have done damage to your head and head gasket. The hose is less than $20. The coolant is less than $30. A new head gasket job is over $1000. It seems that you never grew up around men who were mechanically inclined or simply had no interest in learning what they were doing so we are now seeing the repercussions of that ignorance. A lot of technical colleges have a short evening course on basic automotive maintenance geared towards the complete novice to teach them about the basics of their cars. Things like fluid changing and checks, basic diagnosis and general maintenance. The cost is reasonable. The one in my town has them during the summer semester. I think you should take one. Empower yourself with some knowledge. Even if you aren't going to do the work on your car, you'll be able to spot warning signs and be able to make an intelligent decision on if it is safe to limp it home or a wrecker is needed. You'll maybe even be able to spot things coming up, like seeing that a radiator hose is getting bad and either change it yourself or get it somewhere to have that done before it blows. This is the knowledge that is going to save you thousands of dollars over the course of your life. This is why I get my kids off the video games and out in the garage with me. When they start driving they need to know more than just where to put the gas. Its unfortunate you didn't have that growing up.

Interesting. I have a feeling your going to have a lot more wrong than a radiator hose. If that engine survives, it needs to be put on an alter and worshiped. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
