Hi - brand new to the forum
2002 Ford Windstar sport se
3.8L v6

I'm wondering if there is an a/c bypass pulley available for this vehicle... searched online with no luck so far. Auto parts place suggested measuring belt length with string (minus compressor and pulley) to locate a belt that would fit once removed as he said that often belts for the no a/c option wouldn't fit properly. I've done some looking at option packages for this vehicle and don't believe it was offered without a/c Van has over 300k km and the compressor has not worked for some time...hoping for options to get me by for another year or so.... please help if you can
Thanks

The only time they make bypass kits for the a/c, is when there is no way to route a belt around the area where the compressor is.....

On your vehicle, if it's possible to get a belt on it where compressor wouldn't get in the way of the routing then there will be no kit for it......It's just hit or missing, you measure the area the way the parts guys told you to, minus the comp area. You go down, get a belt, try to put it on and if it's too long or too short, then you go back to the parts and get another one until you get one that fits.......Obviously trying to keep the belt & package as clean as possible or they won't take it back

The diagram doesn't tell me but make sure you have a clean line of site for the belt between the crankshaft and the idler pulley. Make sure it isn't going to contact anything.

Thank you Sidom - I'll do my best to get a good measurement and when I hit on the right length I'll post it. I appreciate your time and the advice in the reply.

Thanks for the reply and the diagram Hammer - may be a dumb question but when rerouting (assuming there are no obstacles) the flat (outside or non ribbed) side of the belt should still run against the idler pulley right? As I told Sidom, when I sort out the right belt length I'll be sure to post it here in case someone else needs it. Appreciate the help.

No problem.....As you can see by the diagram that HT posted.....you just jump from the crank #7 to the #3 idler. From the diagram it looks like it should work....But as HT suggest look the area over and make sure nothing will hit the belt on the new path....No studs coming out of the block or brackets, etc....

Yes, run it to the inside of the idler.

No such luck for me - lower rad hose feeds into casting directly in line between crank pulley and idler. Is there another alternative to replacing the compressor?

Nope, you're out of options. You either install an idler in place of the compressor or another compressor with a working clutch and pulley bearing.

Yeah, kinda figured.... never have much luck getting the easy way to work. Thanks anyways. Any ideas on locating an idler pulley kit? Or should I just bite the bullet and find an inexpensive rebuilt compressor.

The only company I know that makes them is Dormon so if they don't make that one, you are probably out of luck.

I was looking now yesterday and didn't find a ready made bypass pulley. Your call, keep hunting or get a whole used one the at least clutch bearings are good and us it as a pulley only but unplug the clutch so it doesn't think of trying to engage.

Didn't check an A/C site I'm at rarely out of Phoenix and you bet no A/C isn't popular there but will look when I can and post back only if one found,

T

I want to first thank everyone for their assistance. Ideas and pointers all come in handy. I also appreciate the searches. Luck was with me today - found a compressor at a junkyard with good bearings for about 1/3 the cost of anything I could locate in stock at local parts places. 4 hours and a few choice words later its running again. Wouldn't want to fight that battle again - makes me all the more respectful of the guys who make their living wrenching on these things. Thanks again to all for the help. My wife says thanks too!

Glad to hear you found a way to resolve it.

Closing question now as solved to keep the spammers out.
