05 equinox compressor Sign In

2005 chevy equinox,LS,6cyl 3.4, 90k car in great shape no problems till now a/c blows hot air at low rpm, blows cold if on gas accelerating, will blow hot at 45 mph when rpm drops in o/d. blows hot at idle. In shop now mechanic says compressor may be weak wants to replace. dealer says $800 take a week to get it. Have seen posts about this, some have been told this is a sotware issue. some said new compressor fixed problem. found compressor on line for $400. any advice.

Re: 05 equinox compressor Sign In

It's not a software issue. It's a mechanical pressure problem assuming the compressor is staying engaged when this problem occurs. If the compressor is weak, it won't be able to maintain sufficient suction at lower RPM and those are the exact symptoms you will see. $800 is not out of line at all if they are using a new compressor and not re manufactured. I definitely would not use a reman and that's likely what your seeing online. You are also not factoring in all the related work that has to be done with this. The old compressor has likely sent all kinds of metal particles through the system and all that has to be flushed out. The accumulator and orifice also have to be replaced also. The evacuate and recharge alone is usually over $150.

Thanks, yes compressor cycles during the warm air blowing. what makes a compressor weak. i trust my mechanic he owns small shop and is the town specialist on a/c. just didnt like paying $800 for 1 part i know about the other stuff i have been through this before on other cars. 1airconditioning.com has a new oem with clutch for $400, reman is $315. you might check them out and see what you think. was looking for any alternatives to get a part. is this a common problem for equinox. would changing this be your next step. i wont hold you to any guarantee, thanks again

I didn't realize that was just the part price. That is steep. I usually do the whole job around that price or just a little higher.

If the compressor is cycling during the problem, then that's not a worn out compressor. It's low on refrigerant. That could still be due to a leaking compressor but it's not due to wear.

Re: 05 equinox compressor Sign In

he buys his parts from orielly but they dont have or cant get. the $800 was local gm dealer. you got any parts dealers you would recommend. leave on vacation in 3 weeks. low pressure is not the problem its checks high, i added 1 can 2 weeks ago because it checked low on 2 gauges i filled til it checked good, shop says it is 1 can over. i dont think i hurt anything as it is still doing same thing as before i filled it. i filled my dodge on same day using same gauges and it is working great. so now im confused.

Re: 05 equinox compressor Sign In

A compressor will only cycle for 2 reasons, very low pressure or very high pressure. Most always it's low pressure causing the cycling. It's certainly not a bad compressor causing it unless the compressor is leaking and caused a low charge.

What are your high and low pressure readings at idle and 2000 RPMs?

Re: 05 equinox compressor Sign In

Hammertime, I just bought a used 05 Equinox, and it's doing this exact same thing.

I had a question for you; are you still around?

thanks,
Jeff

You will need to start a new question of your own on that.

No, start a whole new thread. We don't address multiple vehicles in the same thread. It's way too confusing for everyone trying to follow it.
