My 1987 grand marquis (62000 miles) has no freon in it. I figured the front seal on the compressor probably dried up from lack of use and started leaking. I got a new compressor for it and it comes with 3oz. of pag oil in it. I have read that pag oil is compatible with other oils, so can I just bolt it on and use it? I am planning on using enviro-safe refrigerant which is supposed to be compatible with either oil. Thanks

Own two of very similar the compressor by age will leak without evidence if exposed to cold - below 20F so you won't find oil evidence it's shut down at those temps.

NO on the PAG if using R-12!! Pay attention the compatible oil is/was Ester Oil for converting to R-134a. You are fine if it's now already 134a "Freon" type of refrigerant.
PAG is NOT for use with R-12 = So which did you use? There's lots of R-12 now ancient but good, recycled or new left over.

It should hold about 43oz of R-12 unless you've changed condenser to "HE" some reduced capacity by 10oz if still R-12.
If now 134a you should be fine and these you put in real close to 80% of what it would have been.

The original problem with these was the "O" rings for "Spring Lock" hoses.
This car you can charge by temp/feel or infrared thermos to accumulator is cold stop there. Fan clutch ages by time not miles so if really nice swap that out for a duplicate of what you have with temperature spring looking thing in front.

Take care of this - it depends on what was used, converted or OE set up still is impossible to last that long without boosts or at least the newer "O" rings.

Follow me? Long reply but know these like the two in front of me - same body and engine set ups, compressors can vary as well as hoses,

The evaporators and hoses are known to leak quite often too. Don't be surprised if other leaks turn up.

I am going to use a r134a replacement which says it is compatible with both types of oil. Do you think it will be ok?

OE was mineral oil is NOT compatible with PAG. Yes you can and should use 134a. Forget the tricks "enviro-safe" fakes 134a is still current. It works just best is 80% of A/C power or BTU ability but these car afford that loss without going nuts changing out condenser (unknown so far if OE or not) can leave it as it's tougher than a new one STILL.
With compressors - dump out what comes with them and put in what your using THEY DON'T KNOW just left something in it. Probably rebuilt by now only choice? People don't seek R-12 there's no service machines I know of for it to save any if a disaster right away leaked all out you can't save it anymore that I know of. Wild cost or just using up what would be wasted at this point?
This era and the Panther* cars they are had strong A/C and the layout of the thing was/is tough as nails and a gutless wonder power wise but incredibly fuel efficient!?

Good luck. Again PAG and mineral oils (sometimes listed as paraffin) is not compatible. Don't mess that up or you kill the A/C in this.
Ester! I said that will mix in don't overload it with oil A/C will be erratic if so,

Since the R134A has been the standard refrigerant for 28 years I find it hard to believe this would be the first time this car is seeing it. That means you have probably already gotten rid of most of the mineral oil in the system previously. You can flush it some more to make sure. If the car already has R134A fittings, then it already has that refrigerant.

PAG oil has found to be a lot better lubricant for 134A components so it is the preferred oil for this system, provided all the mineral oil has been flushed out.
