Hello. I have just been recently having a problem with my Cutlass in which the A/C has suddenly become less cold;compressor is working fine and induction pipes feel very cold. I am wondering if it needs a recharge or something else is the matter. I assumed that if it needed a recharge , then it would lose coolness over time , as only recently it suddenly became less cool;not ice cold , but still cool. I plan to check pressure soon to see if it needs a recharge. I think this model uses Freon though , would it have to be converted?

It needs to be diagnosed and troubleshooted by an experienced A/C tech using a set of professional gauges. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Neti: "Suddenly" less cool suggests a leak which is still the most common reason for poor or less cooling. If history is known and system is original the shaft seal could be the most likely but anywhere possible. It still cools some apparently but know that if this is (unknown without testing with gauges or more) low on refrigerant it is capable of allowing the compressor to self destruct from lack of oil which is carried by a proper charge. Make haste to find out or the troubles could get lots more involved and commensurately more expensive, T

Thank you for your replies. This car has only 48k miles on it , so I thought it would be odd for a leak to already begun forming. I'll have pressure and seals checked in a garage , and see if the mechanics can determine the issue.

Not just miles but that can help with plain wear. Parts to anything are flexible. Rubber parts can degrade and it's sealing the pressure of a gas. Some will say there is a normal rate per year and I don't find that so dependable. Think of even your spare tire that is known like tires do lose some pressure thru the rubber so while on the subject do check that too and make a schedule to check assorted items by time not just miles. Probably a nice older car now and it can still serve you well, T BTW: You do mean an Olds Cutlass? Not critical as it's still a line of GM cars like it.........

Thanks again for the replies. It is a Chevrolet Oldsmobile cutlass. I didn't think about aging very much , but guessed I assumed incorrectly. It'll get checked out at a garage. Do you think it will be pricey?
