I have a 1999 Grand Am. We have had a problem with the heater and with the car overheating. When we first got the car, we would turn on the heat and it would be fine and then when we clicked it over to AC the air coming out was actually hotter than when it was on the heater. Then the car started to overheat. The car would run normal and the heater and AC would work fine. Then when we would turn it on the heater, it would start out hot and then go cold and then the car would overheat. We replaced the thermostat twice, the radiator, the water pump, the belts and have had it checked all over for blown gaskets and for cracks in the heads and block. Recently we were driving it with the AC on and the car will not overheat, but as soon as I turn it to the heater it overheats like crazy and the coolant comes flowing out of the overflow tank. Any suggestions? Also, the power steering pump feels like it is going out. The fluid is full and the steering feels fine when you first start the car, but as you start to drive it and the car starts to warm up, the power steering gets really tight and hard to turn, especially when you are stopped. Could this be related to why it might be overheating?

Hmmm? Seems like things are working fine with A/C requested! That suggest fan(s) are forced on and that in turn keeps engine cool. Without that request fan is too late or won't come on for radiator/condenser and you overheat which when it boils renders no heat as the air bubbles don't transfer heat. Not good for engine either! The PS might be - a wet belt from coolant getting on it or tension is at the limit and it's slipping. Wouldn't hurt to suck out and change PS fluid, refill and run, repeat as a change of fluid by dilution method if you will. New fluid can help with the pump sometimes. Good ATF should do for fluid, T
