Does it blow cold air when you take it off Max? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Is belt tight enough? Smacks of an overcharge and returning liquid to be compressed as evaporator isn't finished evaporating refrigerant and the fresh air is hotter and might be able to. Battey light would light as belt is stalling out with way over stressed compressor if this is what I think. Take pressures when working, observe belt. Check tension of belt as well, T PS on edit: If this has the foam blanket on accumulator take it off. It needs to be exposed to warmer air underhood and the sweat will rot them out in time....

I have a little different suspicion here. I'm suspecting that the compressor is locked up and it isn't even engaging when not in Max position. When it does engage, it stalls the engine.

Could be. Dang it help to be there watching, listening and plain observing stuff. Control may just send power like it's requesting VENT on MAX or who knows for sure right now? T

That makes things pretty strange then because the only thing you change when you switch from reg A/C to MAX a/c is that a door closes that switches you from taking in outside air to inside air. Should have no effect on the engine at all.
