Hi this is my first time posting. I have a car repair issue that I believe could be very dangerous if I do not get the correct information.
I have a 2003 Toyota Sienna CE 3.0 V6. My husband and I started noticing that when we turned the car it had a grinding noise to it. We thought nothing other than adding more power steering fluid (we both do not know a lot about cars.) So we added more and it seemed to have fixed the problem. After that since I drive the car almost more often then not I knew something was off. The van didn't seem running right, but nothing was going on. A few days later we started smoking, and I mean lots of white smoke. Knowing what I do about cars I knew it could be several things and told my husband it's bad whatever it is. Now we are going through a quart of fluid everyday and I believe it's the pressure hose and the rack and pinion leak. We spoke to the repair shop and they agree that it could very well be it as well, without seeing it they can't be sure but said it would cost 1400 dollars for all the repairs if that indeed was wrong with it. I'm pretty scared to drive the van with our children. How dangerous is a rack and pinion leak with a pressure hose leak as well? The leak is pretty big in the driveway and we are seeing a trail of fluid in the street in front of our house. How bad is this leak?

If it's leaking that bad, then you are going to lose you power steering if you try to drive it. I would suggest you having it towed to the repair shop for safety.

So this is dangerous? I figured it would be. Is a quart a day a lot of fluid? And what happens if the rack and pinion isn't repaired? Ive looked up online and did some research but I'm not fully understanding what it means. Would it be like driving a manual steering car? Or would I lose complete steering of the van? Thank you for your patience and time I really appreciate it. I wanted to add we are putting fluid in it everyday and it's been about 2 weeks of this

No, it would be much harder than manual steering which is very dangerous and hard to drive. Not only that but you will also burn out your pump in addition to the repairs you already have to do.

The hose is 50-131 at Rock auto. The pump is 125-204
A complete rack and pinion unit is 215-426.
I cannot imagine paying 1300 labor just for the hose.

The smoke means the fluid is hitting a hot engine part... If it gets hot enough, it WILL catch fire. Don't drive it anymore.

It is my understanding that no one has even looked at this car yet and somehow we got to $1400.

If all you have is a bad hose, it will not cost anywhere near that so get the car towed and find out what the problem is.
