I have a problem with the heater. After driving a distance (sometimes 100 miles other times 40 miles) the heater stops and blows cold air. I have had it into several shops for repair and they can find nothing wrong. They tell me that if I bring I n in when it is not working they could check it out.
The problem, is that when it stops working I am many miles away.
I have changed the thermostat and that didn’t make a difference.
I also notice when I am driving when I slow down the speed of the fan goes faster.
thanks

Which fan goes faster as that matters quite a bit right now -- the blower fan inside or fan for radiator?

At a glance this shows all signs of overheating quite possibly due to vapor slowly getting into cooling system. THAT is if you notice the engine's fan running faster.

40-100 miles is going to make this a slow problem and during a cool down probably draws back enough coolant into engine itself to pump around again and cool properly with coolant remaining staying as a liquid instead of hot vapor which will only blow cool/cold air through a heater core.

This needs more time to pin it down to my intuition of what is happening only so far. If the fan issue is inside blower then there's change in what could do this. Any form of climate controls could somehow be changing what you've requested for an assortment of reasons but as said I don't think that's what you meant but need YOU to clarify that,

Thanked for the response. The fan am talking about ids the heater fan not the engine fan. It is running slower when I am driving fast and then when I slow down to take a corner or something i hear it speed up.

Re: 2004 eddie Bauer Ford explorer Sign In

I bet wrong on this. Now this changes issue to a control panel and the actuators not responding is the likely cause. I think you hear blower motor (you called it heater motor) which is same for any air flow blown into vehicle is changing from heat to some mix of outside air and recirculated air and sound does change and so does volume of flow. Temp changing suggests with two issues the control head more likely as I think it would take two actuator failures that control temp of air and where it's directed + from where to be off at once.

Hate to say I'm totally lost as to why this waits some miles to do this?? Dang, finding what is working properly by the time someone checks it out is going to make it hard to nail down why.

I need to let another suggest something you can do to check or what to do more than I can really think of that' s much real help for this for you.

For now make sure temp of engine doesn't overheat and should stay pretty steady if you are wanting heat suggests outside temps low enough to help.

Really out of likely is the silly plastic air dam they put low under front bumper that many can easily be torn off and not even notice if so. Those at speed direct air OVER bumper, thru grille and over the vehicle but I would think any issue if that at all would be at speed not slowing down when it about totally doesn't matter and if that critical would do it sooner than this 40-100 mile thing?

Last wild shot is to ask if anything has been done to dash for anything, radio or something else that could have disturbed something?

I lied - one more last question: Any evidence of a critter living under the hood or chewing on things? Like maybe a nest of some sort you don't see inside things?

Bit lost with this, sorry,

T
