2007 Chrysler T&C A/C diagnostic Sign In

Static pressure is 83. Start cold engine, turn ac on, high side goes up to 260 w/compressor on and low side hovers around 20. Compressor shuts off, high side drops and low side drops then goes into vacuum. No cooling at all in cabin. Compressor kicks back on then same as above.

Should low side EVER go into a vacuum? What do these readings indicate?

No rear ac on this van.

Thanks,
Greg

Is there any prior history on this vehicle? Was anything done to the AC before this?

Thanks for the reply.

No. I bought the van new. A/C worked great last time it was used, March?

During a heat spell last week it stopped cooling.

Find a shop with the right equipment and have the system completely evacuated and recharged to the proper level.

Since these vans use a 2 speed cooling fan, it can be very deceiving about the level of refrigerant it contains. You cannot accurately charge this using pressures.

Your symptoms could simply mean it is very low on refrigerant which brings up your next problem of finding and repairing the leak. These vans are pretty notorious for bad evaporators.

Is it possible for the low side to go into vacuum at any time under normal operation?

If not,

Assuming it has enough 134a,. Could it be the thermal expansion valve sticking?

Its not normal, but you should still have the system charge recovered and charged to the correct weight. Then go from there.

Stop trying to assume anything and have the system charged to the proper level. Pressure readings mean absolutely nothing until the exact amount of charge is in the system.

Wow Hammer,... You come down like one !
I
My question was asked to see if my (novice) diagnosis could be right.

I have taken your advice and it's in the shop now.

You realize here in California, in my area they charge $175 to suck the old stuff and put in new. I haven't spent that much on any of my cars in a long time. I will know more tomorrow. And will post the outcome.

Ease up sport. $175 is chump change for A/C anything. Jeez, that's just a good parking space in Boston! You shouldn't see a vacuum on low side ever was the first answer. Why would it? Low charge from a leak.

So by vacuum and charging to known amount you at least can know if the system works when properly charged.

For decades Mopars like this have been evaporator leakers. For free you can stick a Q-Tip in the drain where water drips out if/when it works if that's oily you are up for some real serious bucks - thousands.

Small price to know that it can work IMO or maybe get a season more out of it,

Ok, the van has AC and it colder than I remember. It was 'a can low' . I guess he can measure what came out. It holds 24 ounces. The tech said I have a very slow leak but he thinks it was the Schrader valve. Unfortunately I wash my engine bay often and a leak will show oil. The Schrader valve was replaced and I will attempt to look for oil spots.

I appreciate the advice given on this forum,. Thank you.

Re: 2007 Chrysler T&C A/C diagnostic Sign In

Do you have the right person/help with this? "A can low!" You mean a 12oz can? Yes that's enough low for this to lose cooling but the idea is know how much came out so you know how much it was off and fill to a known # of ounces no guessing. Machine should be using a recovery tank and or 30 pounder not the little cans which is in fact the same product if no sealers are in it most have sold to DIYers.

A leaking Schrader is not suspect it's an easy diagnosis - I don't understand that one. Most you can just loosen and tighten a tad and they are fine. Takes tools to replace one and not lose the charge or get new OE grade caps do make a final seal - usually. Anything can mess up with those and you can see those with a red-neck spit test. Just know it's a different size than tire Schraders, 1/4" not the tire size.

So far I suspect this recent work wasn't very professional based on one can low and such an easy diagnosis of if a Schrader is leaking. OMG - this if front only, only hold about 36oz at most which is 3 can's but the exact amount is listed under the hood for the specific vehicle not always trusted off a chart.

Good news is system works. Now just fix the leak and be done with this IMO,

Re: 2007 Chrysler T&C A/C diagnostic Sign In

Hopefully he added some UV dye so you can look for the leak next time.
