Sometimes fan won't work. When on, usually cold but sometimes goes from cold to warm while driving. Wife took it to shop and was told fan needs replaced-OK. Also told because previous shop had put stop leak in system, they would have to remove coolant and replace. She would have to have this done 4-5 times estimate of several hundred dollars no promise this would fix issue may need whole system replaced $3,000.00. I said I smell BS and at least get a 2nd opinion. She won't listen. I'd appreciate any input. Thank you.

? You mean fan to condenser sometimes doesn't work? That would make it go warmer or warm at slower MPH speeds especially and needs correcting.
SEALERS: Sold everywhere as a last ditch fix and doesn't warn you! Suks. Assorted types so can't know which or a couple in this. I really can ruin a system. Two types are deadly are a fine baby powder of dust in oil pushed by refrigerant is just a disaster.

The other I don't see for sale is a can that only that can will dispense it as it will clog the dang hose on the can when exposed to air or humidity. Can make a varnish like or polyurethane like mess if exposed with almost no chance of working and a big chance of harming real A/C shop equipment if known many wouldn't touch that vehicle - I won't.

These are last try things as said. If it doesn't work it really has trashed everything if it leaks still and many items can't be flushed free of it so really does cost a fortune.

Since it can work at all the likely problem for the time being is just a fan for condenser if that's what you meant you need that to operate properly separate from the refrigerant is another thing entirely.
Fix the fan and cross fingers with sealer for another time it might leak,

I'm all for fixing the fan. There was no mention of it leaking. I think the other shop she took it to a few months ago just put some coolant/stopleak in to see if it would help. I am skeptical about going back 4-5 times to have the refrigerant replaced. They want $700.00 to replace fan and replace refrigerant once then have her keep coming back to have refrigerant replaced. Is this common practice?

Although I agree that sealer is bad and can cause some clogging, I think they are dramatically exaggerating the issue here. They could quickly purge the system and probably get most of it out, then recharge it.

The only components that are usually directly effected by the sealer are the expansion valve/orifice tube and the dryer. I don't believe it will harm the condenser, compressor or evaporator, although one of them may already have a leak triggering the need for the sealer in the first place.
