post locked   2012 Chevy cruze 1.8L A/C issues. Stumped.

Recently recharged my car a/c. Pulled vacuum successfully with no vacuum leaks in the system. Filled the system with freon and the a/c started to blow cold, but not as cold as it should. HP line got hot as it should and LP line got cold as it should. Thought maybe we put too much freon so we vented a small amount. Manifold gauges read normal for LP, but not high enough for HP. around 35 to 40 for LP side and 140 for HP side when it should be around 190. A day goes by and the system isnt cooling anymore, and both lines are not getting hot or cold as they should. Expansion valve isnt getting frosty or making any strange sounds, and the compressor clutch is engaging as it should. Blend doors in cabin working fine. Do i have have a bad compressor? Any questions needed to help diagnose the issue let me know and ill answer accordingly. Thank you for your time.

Diagnosing and repairing an AC system is not as simple as people like to think. There are many factors that go into diagnosing a system.

Did you charge it by weight? You cannot charge a system by pressure. How much refrigerant did you put in?

Ditto - OMG it's that time of year already :-) A/C. Should be a sticker stating exact fill amount. Do the math if converting to ounces.
As Hammer said it has to be spot on or nothing is going to add up properly. Most for years now use very little so each ounce matters.

Other: The reason? Usually a leak, leaks are not normal make sure you add some dye at least, it stays in system. Holding a vacuum is great but not 100% leaks are either way, into vacuum or out the same. Running pressures are MUCH higher than holding a vacuum,

The first step in this is to know exactly how much refrigerant is in this thing.

When you said the high pressure line was hot are you referring to the Discharge line or the liquid line?

car calls for 24 ounces. little less than 2 cans. system was fully purged, then refilled. what i mean by lines getting hot and cold are the refrigerant lines. low pressure and high pressure lines. as far as i can tell no leaks in the system either. held vacuum for half an hour or more with no change in vacuum pressure according to the manifold gauges.

You are proving you are in over your head and AC is not a DIY job.

There are not just high pressure and low pressure. There are 2 different high pressure lines and a suction line. The two high pressure lines are not supposed to be the same temp.

You didn't say why you were charging it in the first place. If it was low on refrigerant, then it definitely does have a leak. Holding vacuum for 30 minutes is not an indication of no leaks.

I don't know what cans you are using but the majority of them are 12 ounce cans. The actual spec for this car is 22.4 ounces, 1.4 lbs

the reason it needed a recharge is from a prior issue. it has nothing to do with this situation. and it needed freon because i purged it all a year ago. and yes i know the pressure lines are not supposed to be the same temp, one should be cold and one hot. im a layman, thats why im here to get a diagnosis so i can buy the right part to replace. and yes i know the cans are 12 ounces. i said i used a little less than 2 cans.

We won't get anywhere if you don't read what I wrote.

Do you know the difference between a discharge line and a liquid line?

The discharge line runs from the compressor to the condenser and should be hot.

The liquid line runs from the condenser to the expansion valve. It is also a high pressure line but should not be hot. When you get the refrigerant level correct you have to feel that line for correct temp. The choices are
room temp
warm to the touch
hot to the touch

At this point you have bled off refrigerant of unknown quantity so the right way to do this is to totally evacuate and recharge with the correct weight.

After that feel the temp of the liquid line. Let me know the result, the refrigerant pressures and whether the cooling fan is running or not.

only reason i bled freon was because system started working, but the next day it stopped cooling. i m pretty sure refrigerant isnt the issue. im thinking either expansion valve or compressor. also another thing, when i turn ac on, the cooling fan does not turn on. it works at operating engine temps but not for ac. when we first filled the system and it was cooling, the fan did engage but then stopped.
