316 heater issue Sign In

hi
my dad's 1998 bmw 316i heating system is giving him problems. it is intermittent. sometimes you can control when the heater starts, however at other times the heater stops ans starts on it own.
The controls to adjust the temp work even when the heater is uncontrollable.
sorry for lack of info
suffer from rsi
thanks

Is this IYO a blower motor issue - like when it fails it just doesn't blow air out any vents selected?

Any chance this will always or more likely/less likely work on lower fan requests?

So far it sounds like a blower motor issue. Either the motor itself or a grounding issue to it,

hi thanks 4 replying
you can dictate which vent you want it to use
lower fan requests do not make any difference

OK: Intermittent fan/blower as I see it now is NOT a resistor for speed but a go or no go which is usually the motor itself or possibly a connection either power or ground right at it.

If you can tap on the motor when it's NOT working and it kicks to that's a good sign the blower motor is bad.

On a Beamer just getting to it to check might be a nightmare!
