92 corolla ac clutch replace Sign In

92 corolla, 1.6 engine, 110,000

I picked up a 92 corolla for my girl friend that's in good shape except the ac doesn't work. (didn't notice when I bought it)
I found out the compressor belt was removed and wire un hooked. When belt replaced and wire connected the fuse blows. Looked a clutch and noticed it was shot, burnt rubber, bearings bad. the compressor shaft spins but I read online that if I just replace the clutch there is prob other problems.
I took off the clutch- My question is if I replace the clutch and take it to a shop can they remove Freon (r12 yikes) clean system then replace Freon.
is this a possibility and if so about what is cost.
Am I just screwed not looking to spend a fortune. a new clutch is about $90

Thanks

You have a lot more problem than you are thinking. Your compressor grenaded and came apart internally. The clutch cooked because the compressor had too much pressure and locked up. All the debris from the compressor has contaminated the entire system. At the very least you will need a new compressor, dryer and condenser and possibly an expansion valve. You also may have another problem like the fan that caused the failure in the first place.

wow
Lets say I get rid of r12 and just replace some of the system compressor, condenser dryer seals and clean.
Does some one sell all the components as a package to convert
Can this be done for around $500
I have a friend who can evacuate system, pull a vac and refill with r134a. hes an ac guy who has done some work on carac.
I can switch parts (with a lot of cursing!) or am I way off base

Repairing AC is the job that everyone things they know how to repair and few do. Most end up making it much worse and paying a professional to do it all over again, especially attempting a retrofit.

Re: 92 corolla ac clutch replace Sign In

To add to HT, R-12 has more than a couple digits of difference to R-134a. R-12 is a more efficient refrigerant with a boiling point of -21.6 degrees. R-134a on the other hand has a boiling point of -15.3 degrees. That makes a big difference in efficiency of removing heat from your car. It means the compressor will need to cycle more often with 134 than R-12 will to make up for this. It also means your running pressures will have to be higher, which an R-12 system was never designed to take.

Also they differ at the molecular level. R-12 is molecularly larger than R-134a. The use of R-134a requires a special molcular barrier hose designed to do this. It can slip through the pores of an R-12 hose that is small enough to keep R-12 in but not R-134a. This is when they are new. Now how good do you think your system is going to do at holding it in at 22 years old?

Also, the systems require different oils. Ester oil was used in the R-12 systems and PAG oil is used in R-134a systems. The two are not compatible, and the oil is carried by refrigerant so it is in every part of your system. Only a very complete and thorough flush done with the right equipment will get this out, and even then its a crap shoot.

Most shops don't even have an R-12 machine anymore. I have seen nothing but failures from retrofits for the reasons I have noted above. Its a 22 year old beater car. I'd recommend making sure the windows all roll down. Trying to play with this just for the comfort of AC is going to cost you more in the long run than the car is even worth. If you want AC, save up for a car much newer than a 92.

If you think I'm some rich snob, I'm not. I drive a 1990 Bronco. The AC doesn't work and I'm not at all going to waste my time and money trying to make it work even though I can do it for the cost of parts and am certified to service AC systems. It isn't worth it. But not having a car payment is better than having a cold interior to me.

Let me make one correction there.......

R12 systems used mineral oil. Pag oil is used with R134A sytems. The Ester oil is what is used in the retrofit because it is compatible with both R!2 and R134A BUT the lubrication properties of Ester oil is not as good as Mineral oil or Pag oil so the success rate of retrofits is low.

She might have to use it in current condition and wait till we can up grade. Besides the air the car is in great cond for its age.
She lives about an hour away so right now I cant work on the car and am weighing out my options.
Her friend is a cert mech and I'm going to talk with him.
I told her is has what we used to call 2-50 air. Open 2windows go 50mph.
Will keep you guys posted on whats up

Re: 92 corolla ac clutch replace Sign In

Just because he is a certified mechanic does not me he understands AC. I live and work in South Florida so AC is one of my specialties but even here most "mechanics" are not real good with AC repair and diagnostics. I get cars every day that someone else has tried to repair and couldn't and in fact they made it worse. There are many things that need to be observed and recognized during the process. There are also many judgement decisions that have to be made during assembly such as the amount of oil required and where it should be installed.

Hammer T
I understand what your saying
I just figured if I start changing parts he will lend a hand. I'm leaning toward staying with r12 but right now I am in limbo.
If I make a decision I'll let you guys know.
Some one told me about substitutes for r12 but I didn't give it much consideration because I have never heard of any that sound good. my guess is they all don't work.

Re: 92 corolla ac clutch replace Sign In

Not only do they not work but they are illegal to use as refrigerant, flammable and explosive and ruin the shops equipment that they hooked up to your car
