'94 Tracer, no heat

I've got a 94 tracer that just doesn't seem to heat up enough. The temp guage barely moves. I had it in the shop a couple of weeks ago, they started by replacing the thermostat, the problem was still there.They eventually deduced that there was a valve in the thermostat housing that's bad, I'd need a new housing. To further complicate things, when the mech. started it up one morning to move it, he noticed it running rough. He pulled the plugs, & said the #4 cyl. looked "cleaner" than the rest. He used some kind of tool to withdraw air from the radiator, and the liquid in the tool turned a certain color, indicating carb. monoxide fumes, thus indicating a head gasket leak. It does seem to lose radiator fluid over time. Would a cyl. pressure test on all the cyls. tell me if there's a leak? It's confusing, because a head gasket leak should cause a car to overheat, but the whole thing started by trying to find out why it doesn't heat up enough??? Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

I would start by replacing the thermostat with a Motorcraft t-stat and gasket. I have seen aftermarket stats cause more problems because they aren't calibrated just right. If the temp. guage is not pulling off of cold, start with a factory stat and go from there.
