97 Regal driver warm - passenger side cold

1997 Regal with 134,000 miles is having vent problems. The temp on the passenger's side is blowing strong and 40 +/- degrees in this Texas heat. Driver's side is blowing weak and 60 degrees.
The problem started months back. I've cycled every switch and control and fuses. I'm wondering if it is the blendoor. I do not know how to check that.
I can control the passenger's side temp, but that does nothing for the driver's side.

Is it an auto temp control system?
Do you have dual temp controls?

It's possible to a temp door problem.....But a low system will also do that...
The 1st thing to do would be an evac & recharge to make sure you are working with a full system....

He should answer the question of what system he has first.
Then we can easily determine if this is a blend door issue or not.

It is auto with dual controls. I am going to evacuate the system and recharge...tonight, I hope.

On the side that is not cold, are you able to turn it to full heat and get heat?
You can also try pinching off the heater hose and see it it gets cold.

Shortcuts generally cost time and money. I was trying to save this woman money and did not do the job correctly. There was a leak, and under-charge. Repaired the leak, evacuated the system and held vacuum for over an hour. Recharged system per specs, and am getting 42 degrees at pass vent and 44 to 45 on driver's side.
Thanks for your suggestions and help. Made all the difference.

This system has failed again. Refrigerant is very low, BUT when I first connected my gauges, static pressure on the low side was off the scale. Pegged the gauge.
The system worked beautifully for 3 days in Dallas' 95+ with very high humidity then it went intermittent. As I posted previously, when I pulled vacuum, it held with NO loss for over an hour. Now the compressor engages on MAX or NORMAL but only when the circulating fan is on low. I've poked my sniffer all over, and can not find another leak, but I suspect it is leaking at the compressor shaft.
Any suggestions? And can someone tell me where the low pressure switch is located? I suspect this component has a very sharp knee.

Don't worry about the static pressure being so high. This is due to the engine compartment temp.
This system has no pressure switches and it is not a cycling system. It uses a V5 compressor which is a variable pressure system so you can't really judge anything by the pressures.
You obviously have a leak that has to be found. If you haven't previously added dye to the system, it's time to do that now.

Comnavguy - Do know that holding a full vacuum is keeping out 14.7 +/- PSI of atmospheric pressure while when working the system builds pressures in the hundreds.
Nothing found with a sniffer - dye helpful as HT suggested if not in put it in. Check low under things for oil at connections. It worked so look for water outlet for evaporator it shouldn't have oil or dye evidence.
Still sniff around compressor more - connections and underside where belt drives it. Might now show oil and leak anyway when OFF and nobody is around - sneaky things.
Clearly a leak to find even soapy water on hoses. Do rule out plain ports and the caps should seal tight - go easy they can break from tightening,

Well...that sux....
Small leaks can be a pain......If that has the ball fitting for the high side...replace that right outta the gate.....Those fittings are crap and have a very high leak rate.... Any more I replace those everytime when I do any work to the system...
Then just the basics, look for oil leaks on components, check the high side running, low side static... probe the vents, blower on low...evap drain hole.....go over the comp and spin the end plate by had to check the seal....
Dye can help

Thanks, and as usual, youse guys are the best. I cleaned all the connections I could get to with car wash high pressure, particularly around the compressor bearing and manifold. Added a can of 134 dye/stop leak. After dark tonight or tomorrow (I hope) Ill put my UV light to work. I strongly suspect the compressor because there was an elegant sufficiency of oil on the gravel guard under the compressor.

You need to wear yellow glasses when you do that or you won't see it.

I do have and use yellow glasses, BUT now there is another problem. I found what might have been a leak at the manifold of the compressor. But now the compressor will not engage.
I have not measured the power to the clutch YET. Doing that tonight. Re-cacuuming and re-charging the system IF it will take 134.
What would keep the compressor from engaging - low 134, high pressure, thermostat, on/off switch? I'm going to check the clutch wiring, but the intermittent nature of this thing is driving me nuts. Any suggestions? I've done all the tap'n twist of control switches to no avail.

I have gone through the system. Re evacuated and recharged. So far so good. Thanks again for all your help. It is always good to have others to help. and youse guys are the best.
