A/C blower only works on high
|
|
|
My A/C blower didn't work at all but the condenser would go on if I move the switch. I changed the resistor and it works great but only on high. I'm told there is a reostat somewhere but can't find it ???? anyone know where it is? Oh yea! I have a 2001 Saturn SL2, I guess its important to know that.

The resistor is acting as a rheostat? From fan not working at all to only on high now I suspect the motor may draw too much and could have blown the new resistor already. Are connections good or any signs of overheated wire?? Not sure on this. Might be the selection switch but at the moment it's classic for needing the resistor on the distribution box, T

When I bought the car the fan did not work at all. I checked the fuse box inside the car and found the resistor was missing. I bought a new one and that made the fan work on high. The switch has always responded by making the A/C light come on and activating the condenser. I haven't seen any signs of wires getting hot but I do need to look closer. I did notice there was another resistor on the back of the fuse box where the wires from the A/C switch connect but I don't know what it is for. The guy at Saturn told me that the A/c resistor was the same one the use for the fuel pump, I don't know if thats right but thats what he said. Thanks for your quick response so far.

Thought i'd jump here too.. Sounds like you replaced a missing fuse not the blower motor resistor Resistor looks like this Here is a generic pic of what fuses look like

I think we have apples and hand grenades mixed up here I think you are referring to a relay that fits both A/C and fuel pump but there should be two - just perhaps the same part #. A blower resistor is usually a project to get to on the heater/distribution box - generic diagram below...... That is usually placed near blower motor as shown in this sample. Some may require taking dash parts off to even see it or get anywhere near it. It's not in the fuse box. The resistor common failure is defaulting to high speed fan only, T

Okay Im frustrated, I bought the resistor 52454736. But I cant find where it goes. I took the glove box out, took the front dash plate off, took out the stereo, took out the a/c control panel, took out the instrment panel, all I found was dust. Everything looks like one peice and I read that they would put it where it could stay cool but I cant figure out how to get to the back of the vents. I also looked in the outside vent under the wipers with a flashlight cant see anything????????

Resistor is usually located right near where wires to blower motor are to the blower itself, T

I just found this link with a good photo of a 97 mine is a 01. http://www.saturnfans.com/...hoto.php?photo=43076 This looks like a nightmare why are American cars this way. I had a 1964 Tbird that was just like this except it was metal. How you gonna get a screw driver in there? I'm gonna break a nail for sure.

Yes - that's the item. You might be surprised that's not as bad as it looks. Top of dash pad would come out and it's right there - knowing how to do that EXACTLY will be a trick. Screws on the front and slide clips towards the glass most likely. Funny about the 64 T-Bird. Ya - they were all metal but those were tight working in lots of areas for the day as well, T

Okay so that wasnt so bad. The dash only has 2 screws and pops right off and its under the defrost vent. I replaced the resistor However...no change. So I guess I will replace the switch next. If you atempt this time consuming task make sure you have a 5.5mm socket.

Don't you just love those sneaky devils? BTW - 5.5mm also equals I think it's 7/32nds from the very old English measures, T

Well son of a beotch! I fixed my A/C I was cleaning my car and guess what I found under the passenger seat. 3 resistors? For Sh!ts and giggles I took out the new resistor I had bought from autozone (acdelco) and put in one of the ones I had found. The A/C now works like new? I guess I went through a lot of trouble for nothing. But if they had the working parts under the seat why didn't they fix it, why was there 3 and why did they mess with it in the first place? I guess I will have to stand in line after the great pyramids and ufo's before I find out why.

I have a similar problem. We just bought a 2003 Impala for our grandsons first car. The fan for the ac only has 2 speeds, high and off (hopefully not the way he'll drive it). I'm not sure where to start, do I try switching a couple relay's, assuming there are 2 of the same relay's in the box. Or do I pull the switch to check all the wires and continuity through the switch? I haven't had a car that I needed to work on in years (other than routine maintenance).
