A/C recharge question Sign In

2000 Mazda 626
2.0L 4-cyl. engine
> 100,000 miles

AC was blowing semi-cool air. Added a can of A/C Pro refrigerant with sealant. Added one can and gauge measured higher but not where it should be. When I went to add 2nd can the next day the gauge read it was full so I did not add 2nd can.

Next day A/C blowing hot air. Put in auto shop. They found leak near the low pressure service port. After fixing leak they refilled with freon that had dye in it. Now it is blowing semi cool air... not cold so I am not 100% certain they fixed it. Time will tell.

My problem or question is this; they charged me $120.00 extra for replacing 2 filters on their freon extraction device. They charged extra because the A/C Pro refrigerant had a sealant that ruins the filters on their $10,000.00 freon machine.

If there is no freon as it all leaked out then how can their filters be destroyed? Has anyone heard of this before? I feel I have been taken... duped into buying them new filters for their $10,000.00 freon extraction machine. Anyone else experience this?

And now you see the reason that crap should have stayed on the shelf. I don't see why if they knew the sealer was there that they didn't just vent what was left. What they say is completely true but it does sound like they exaggerated a bit.

Actually, I'm proud of them for doing that. Our equipment gets ruined all the time from people putting that crap in their cars and not telling us.

Thanks. makes me feel a bit better.
I can understand their reasoning that if their filter was destroyed then charge me. What doesn't make sense, to me is that the freon had leaked out before I took it to them.

Yeah, that's the part where they exaggerated. It probably wan't necessary in this case.
