AC Compressor question... Sign In

I bought a 2014 Impala in Dec 2013. June 2014 (7 months) my Compressor went up for the first time. July 2017 it just went up again last week.

I'm no mechanic whatsoever I'm just looking for opinions/advice on the situation. How long should compressors generally last? Most accounts I've searched online says 10 or more years some say it should last the life of the car. I'm about to have my 3rd in 3.5 years. Anything helps. Thanks!

That's just an indication that the repair was incomplete or the original cause was not found and repaired.

AC repair is not as simple as many think and requires extensive knowledge to make the system reliable.

Arggh - 7 months - total bummer and as HT said real problem was never solved and IMO too bad for dealer under warranty that new should have it totally gone thru all new no games or said they did and did it wrong or not the whole job.

How long to things last? Tough question for compressors. How long and hard do you work A/C routinely does matter both real % of the year you use it and for how long.

There are things that can break with just roads or debris hitting parts thru the grille. Otherwise would expect trouble free for at least 7/70 years/miles probably the OE aim as a guess but some not worked hard and a problem caught right away can go ages - my own do or since I'm in a rust belt area if car is used all year exposed to road salts as well the car will probably have costly or impossible rust issues before it wears out otherwise.
3rd in 3.5 years isn't close to normal for anything like that I know of,

To add to this, the quality of the parts really matters also. NEVER use a reman compressor.

The biggest factor on how long a repair lasts is how well it was repaired in the first place. When that first compressor let go it sent debris all through the system, mainly the condenser. That should always be changed after a compressor failure, along with knowing the correct amount of oil to put into the system and finding what caused the original failure.

Totally agree going new only for compressors. They are the item that can trash other parts so why add risks?

Just FYI - leaks or any reason refrigerant is low, you notice less cool air gradually the worst. Oil is in systems just for the compressor which should shut down on time but most don't and oil doesn't flow when low on the gas (Freon if you wish to call it) so ruins compressor and tosses junk down the line while still almost working.

That's what probably happened the first time and the total fix was never done or just wild bad luck.

IDK - owned a car with well over 200K did have to fuss to keep A/C going but was original compressor till rusted out so bad could see the rear tires thru the trunk! Really - A/C still worked, ran fine, hopeless rust only,
