Hello, I!m new here, My wife's 1992Cutlass convertible has a power steering pressure switch that at one time prevented the AC clutch from energizing. The mechanic jumpered the normally closed switch and we have had no trouble till now. Ithink the jumper may be at fault, but, I don't know where this switch is located and the clutch is not working again. Any one with some knowledge of this. ....? Thank's for any help! Bob Cox

There are dozens of things that will prevent a clutch from engaging. ?? I knew PS would raise idle when pressure is high and just might cut out compressor. PS high side line should be where any switch is. Plain low pressure switch is on accumulator and perhaps well hidden on this and really shouldn't jump that depending but definitely not left jumped! Chances are it's low on refrigerant or clutch air gap is worn too large to pull in OR a host of other things but those are popular. Just take a static pressure reading which should be fairly close to the temperature in Fahrenheit and if much lower then it needs the leak found and fixed. Is this still R-12 or a retrofit to 134a now? T

Yes it's still R12. Last summer the AC was doing fine when we stored the car for the winter. My wife loves her convertible in the summer but sometimes we need the top up and the air on! I just happened to recall one time a few years ago about the power steering pressure switch preventing the clutch from energizing. I believe it is a normally closed switch and for some reason it was stuck in the open position. Yes, I am aware that it needs gas to operate but I would like to check out that switch if I can find it. I'll look on the high side line for it. Thankyou for that info! the reason I don't know where it is located is because the mechanic I took it to didn't!t think to show me and I did't think to ask. I really appreciate your help.. It's just primary for static pressure to be adequate and so easy to just take a pressure with known temp under hood, engine cold it should be near exactly as the chart here. If so and doesn't engage then move on to other reasons. Hope chart shows........ Pretty exact if you know the temperature. This is pretty much just like checking the pressure in a tire.
