AC froze up/2001 Chrysler Town and Country van Sign In

2001 Chrysler Town and Country van, 3.8 engine, 140,000 miles

The bearings in the air conditioning compressor unit froze up and the pulley no longer turns, so instead of buying a new air conditioning compressor I want to just permanently remove it from the vehicle. Wondering if anyone has done this? And any suggestions on what size belt would work? Or any other suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

The belt application doesn't offer a non-AC belt for that vehicle so that usually means it can't be eliminated, probably due to interference in the routing.

For some vehicles they offer an "elimination pulley" to take the place of the compressor. You might look into that.

PS, it's not just bearings that froze up. The whole inside grenaded and seized up and probably contaminated the whole system with debris.

Just first before we go on to delete A/C in this find out if the clutch is frozen or the compressor itself they are TWO different things really on the same "compressor." If it can spin quietly and smoothly with it unplugged and screeched the belt when it tries to engage you could just leave it unplugged and or replace bearings in the clutch or clutch and the unit is just the holder for that as just a Pulley. Belt(s) continue to work fine as if it's just off never allowed to engage again - follow me? Ask if not.

Other: Many you can't just order the belt if this did NOT come new without A/C and all else works it's highly part of the whole operation.

Choices: 1. You could get a whole working compressor with clutch that works if the unit you have is just all messed up leave that one disabled and carry on.

2. Let you search or ask have all info including VIN# there are "dummy" brackets with the pulley in position you can get for many and just remove the entire compressor clutch and all it's still using the OE belt is actually important as other items on that belt depend on the % of belt contact each item vs another size that just fits about never will.

Hard to be concise but know what level of failure you have and choose the right way to defeat A/C in this is still a job to do and YES it can be done and is all the time.

Why? It's possible and likely that the cost of total repair if not needed enough (this is true where I live) simply exceeds all possible value but nice to know that first.

Yup - I suggest if you are NOT sure get it checked by still an A/C tech making it known you are willing to do with A/C but which way is best specific to this with what problem.
Short money to make a repair you can then forget about and use indefinitely just to behave as if special ordered (most came with A/C wanted or not) I think you could order this without A/C at all but a LOT of things would be all different including how fans operate for example.

Good luck - done all the time for specific reason many folks do not need it you already said that just do it properly ONCE so issue is over and no you really are destroying chances of ever making it work properly again too not just a temporary change,
