Re: Charging issues Sign In

Locate the liquid line that goes from the condenser to the POA valve and feel the temp at idle

Is it warm to the touch, hot to the touch or room temp?

Re: Charging issues Sign In

The liquid line coming from the bottom of the condenser goes to the expansion valve right before the evap not the POA replacement

The line coming out the evap through the POA is compressor suction

That line is about ambient

Re: Charging issues Sign In

That indicates you have no flow in that line which indicates a blockage in the system somewhere. Suspect the dryer or the exp valve.

Re: Charging issues Sign In

Both parts are new

In fact this is a second expansion, because of the same thinking

Evap has been removed and flushed
Shop air blown through as well

Re: Charging issues Sign In

Are you sure you're giving it the correct charge?

The bottom line is the temp of that line indicates no flow and you need to find out why.

Re: Charging issues Sign In

I agree

The line past the POA replacement get colder if that makes sense

Re: Charging issues Sign In

Could the evap be holding oil on the lower end causing restriction

Re: Charging issues Sign In

That doesn't help much. That liquid line should be warm to the touch if everything is operating properly.

If it has a sight glass, that may help you diagnose things.
The other concern you have is that I assume you are using R134A in a system engineered for R12. Not all retrofits work well.

Re: Charging issues Sign In

Liquid line gets a bit hot, but I'm extreme south Louisiana with ?100% humited on a good day

Sight glass (on drier) shows flow. Not milky

I know I'm mis matching parts, but the only mechanical part is the expansion valve. I've done these conversions before with no issues.

This may help. Compressor run steady at idel speed, but cycles every second when you increase rpm

OK, which is it?

Lol

High pressure line from drier to expansion to evap
Get hot before exp, cold after

Discharge/suction/low coming out of evap is ambient

This would tell me restriction in evap, but it's been flushed and blown trough

Re: Charging issues Sign In

That changes everything. A hot liquid line means it's not condensing for some reason. Check the condenser and fans. The original R12 condenser may not be large enough for R134.
If you're relying on the original fan clutch, that probably isn't enough. You might consider an electric fan.

New 134a condenser from a 2003 Chevy truck

Electric cooling fans
One set to come on with compressor second on engine temp

Re: Charging issues Sign In

I don't know if you are reading your high pressure before or after the condenser but you could be dealing with a very high pressure before the condenser. That would explain the compressor cycling. I have seen discharge hoses rupture internally and act like that. You don't see the high pressure because you are reading it after the obstruction.

Re: Charging issues Sign In

That's what I was pointing out. It's not reading pressure before the condenser.

Re: Charging issues Sign In

That is on the outgoing line from the condenser
Actually at the furthes point it can be.

Also, would that not cause low side to be high

No, not if there is insufficient refrigerant moving.
