I have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport 3.3L with the Flex Fuel capability it has 160,000 miles.
When you turn on the ac, the car makes a terribly whiny sound like a bearing does when it is bad and hot. It also starts smoking from around the pulley on the compressor. So, from this I deduced that the compressor was bad, however, when i went to look up the part i noticed that you can buy the clutch pulley assembly separately. My question is could this be the problem? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated. While I am no mechanic I have a strong mechanical back ground.

Your problem may go much deeper than that. You need to first hook up a set of professional gauges to determine what the pressures are. It's entirely possible that the pressure is just so high that the compressor can't push it and forces the clutch to slip. t could be the compressor locking up also. I would definitely not change the clutch only. The heat alone generated by the clutch slippage would take out the front seal. You will likely have to change the whole compressor, accumulator and expansion valve at the very least. You need need to find the cause of the problem before doing anything. I would definitely advise you against using a reman on the compressor also. They are worthless.

Thanks for the assist. I was figuring on having to replace the whole compressor anyway, but when i pulled up a parts list for it I saw that you could get the clutch assembly separate. i just wanted to be sure before i drop the cash that I really don't have

Make sure you find the original problem first so you don't take out the new compressor
