Coolant and mechanic problems
|
|
|
Took my 2011 Jeep Liberty(84,000 miles) in to a Jeep dealership because I as having problems with my temp controls not working and my window was broken. They replaced the temperature gauge and window regulator. Brought it home to find that it will now not hold wiper fluid because of a missing grommet on the wiper fluid container and my passenger side floor is soaked in antifreeze. Wiper fluid was holding fine prior to taking it in and they aren’t taking responsibility for it and cannot give me an explanation as to why they sent me home with a floor soaked in antifreeze. I understand that this is probably the heater core...my question is what could’ve happened at the dealership to where I was sent home with these problems after taking it in to be “repaired” at the tune of $500. I don’t know what to do...I’m a lady in a new area and have no one to help. The dealership is being extremely rude about it all. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

The window regulator repair shouldn't have anything to do with any of that. Why would they replace the temperature gauge? That shouldn't have caused a leaking heater core. Was the gauge not working? When you stated temp controls, did you have a problem with heater not working? I don't see how they could have caused those issues. They may have topped off your windshield wiper reservoir and the seal was already bad before hand. The temp control problem may have been a coolant leak to begin with and not a gauge problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

There was no wiper fluid in the vehicle when I brought it home and there was when i took in. Also, if it was a leak and the gauge was changed...is that an easy thing to miss...also just wondering why I would’ve been sent home with a floor full of antifreeze (noticed 20 minutes later)when I had just paid to have it “fixed”. Why I picked up my car from a 9 day repair with a floor full of antifreeze and no explanation is baffling to me

Sorry, to answer your question, there was no cold air coming out when the AC was turned on and the Jeep was overheating

Bay40: What do you mean by "temp controls" not working properly? Agreed this is well confused if you meant just temperature gauge or a warning of engine temp is all different what could be wrong than temperature controls for interior temps. Washer bottles can stink. Cheap junk you can wreck one just or putting caps back on pushing down - some that lousy. Antifreeze you mean engine coolant on floor no doubt is almost always a heater core leaking see the color from a drip and odor. If that was leaking before and you didn't notice you'd have ENGINE temp real problems so need to know which or just what you meant. IDK about this shop's work but depending on what troubles you had and didn't say to me clearly it may not be over at all. You really shouldn't be busting a heater core for anything done a wiper reservoir remains an IDK are two different things. Being treated rudely isn't cool no matter what presumably they are in biz and you are the customer should deal with the biz better than being rude it's hard enough a biz and expense to you both need to meet minds. Yup - sometimes (IMO no more than other trades) places or the way it's run stinks and finding the better shop a job for you, T

If I was to wild guess and i don't recommend doing that, I would guess that you had a heater core leak all along causing the overheat and they misdiagnosed by flushing out the system which actually made the heater core worse. I can't explain the washer problem unless they had to remove the tank to flush the coolant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

OK: Bay40 you posted twice while I was writing. You have more problems the overheating now I read as engine overheating. That can open up a host of problems many severe engine problems! Just blaming it on a sender for engine temp wasn't diagnosed well. A/C not working is it's own thing really not engine coolant that alone if alone would be it's own thing. These vehicle's are or were more common to leak A/C refrigerant at same location of heater cores if messed with one possibly harm the other but those aren't $500 bills either so still confused just what was done? No cool air and engine was over heating. Sorry for the confusion. They changed the thermostat, put more coolant and called it a day. I noticed the chemical odor and shortly after pulling off the lot I noticed the soaked floor. I am so frustrated as to why my vehicle was returned to me like this. Thank you!

This isn’t what I’m thinking. I don’t like to blame people for things that I am not clear on. Just wondering why my vehicle was returned in this condition with no explanation. Im just wondering if I paid for parts and labor for something that didn’t even fix the problem. I’m a bit confused at how the leak was missed...is that an easy overlook? Thank you very much.

All hitting at once isn't helping either. HT said before I hit post same as I was thinking - this engine has lots more wrong and they took a guess. I would personally have explained it to you with the problem now understood. Yes, I might give flushing it out and new thermostat a try but let you know it tested fine AFTER just that much? It probably did wreck the heater core if just hot enough lots of things go wrong even Underhood temps so high you washer bottle failed. Time to get this totally understood and what it's going to cost as best as can be known at an accredited shop both of you need to cooperate or decide this expense exceeds what you are willing to take on now and make a change in vehicle? Yup - that bad possible, Tom (edit more: Yes also that A/C can quit with an engine overheating may or may not be a problem just defaulted to shut down too hot for it alone to use?)

Hitting fast. Look back I added an edit to my last post. Lots of stuff all at once? Window had little to do with it just bad luck or abused? Can't know some last some don't, Tom

Sorry for all the posts! I know the window had nothing to do with it. Haha. I am just curious, as a mechanic, how easy would it be to miss this leak or send someone home with a floor full of antifreeze after having the vehicle for over a week. I was given no answers by the mechanic.

Yes, it appears he was very inexperienced or maybe just lazy as he wasn't thorough enough with his testing or looking over his work when finished. You may want to take it to a higher level at the dealer. You were treated pretty bad.

He is not the end of the line. There are managers above him both in that dealership and if that doesn't work, at the district level.

Re: Coolant and mechanic problems

Thank you all so much. I have to take it back today or tomorrow so they can put the grommet on the wiper fluid tank. I was told to bring it back to see if the floor mat accumulated any more coolant. Am I correct in assuming that there was probably an antifreeze leak and that it was flushed and if it was flushed that it leaked through the heater core and onto the floor. If so, I don’t think the “wait and see” tactic is going to work as it would’ve been emitted when flushed. Or am I totally off?

The flush idea was just a wild guess. We don't know if it happened that way. Yes, if the heater core is leaking, it will only get worse. Your carpet will be ruined unless it is cleaned and dried out real soon. It will probably have to be removed to do that.

Posted by BAY 40 Re: Coolant and mechanic problems Ended up having to have it towed to another shop because it was still overheating and leaking. It was the heater core as suspected.
