Defroster not working

Hi, My front defroster won't work, it blows out every vent except the defroster. I don't know what the trouble is, but I would like to know before I go to have it checked. The blower didn't work at all a couple times, but it's been working good for a few months now, I did notice a new noise when I turn it on now. Would that be the reason the defroster doesn't work? I should replace it? I appreciate any help and advice, Thank you! 2003 Mercury Sable 3.0L V6 DOHC

Both manual and automatic ac systems use vacuum to control air distribution through the chamber box. Usually if you don't have vacuum, mode door defaults to the defroster position. Probably going to have to remove the passenger side air bag and inspect the defroster vacuum motor and see if it moves when you change your vent selections. If it does move the linkage back and forth, you might have a mechanical problem with the defroster door inside the chamber box. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
