High high side pressure (restricted condensor)?

2006 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3

Having issues with High high side pressures, even after putting just 12oz in the 38oz system the high side pressure is well over 200psi, with 24oz over 300psi. Low side stays around 40-45psi. I have cleaned the condenser and it appears to not have any airflow restriction, the motor is not getting hot, and the fans work. I used a fan in front of the vehicle as well. I just installed a new compressor (old compressor was not pumping one bit), i also replaced the drier and the TXV. I ran cleaner threw the condenser (internal) and i noticed when i blew it out with the air gun it seemed restricted, as in if i just pushed the trigger on the air gun for a second then removed the gun from the line i would get a good burst of air coming back out of the line. Should it have some restriction or be able to flow enough to keep up with an air gun?

Now one thing that is confusing me is that i believe it is the condenser, but, the high side port is after the condenser, not before. Wouldn't this show lower than normal pressure on the downside of a restriction or am i thinking of this wrong?

Seems old compressor "grenaded" and condenser is plugged up solid or pretty close not that unusual as they can't be cleaned effectively. Any remaining solvent to flush out systems probably isn't all out so more trouble.


Tuition for learning A/C is frightfully high frequently setting you back worse off than before you started.


First you must know you are charging into a vacuum that held. With the little cans the first whole can in a 38oz system should have about completely gone in without engine/compressor engaged at all and perhaps part of the next.


Your replacement compressor may already be wrecked from lack of lube adding more debris.


These really should be filled totally to exact weight by equipment that can do that not sucked in by the compressor is just too slow to get oil flowing if everything was perfect would be risky for compressor this way. The equipment is prohibitively expensive to do just this part.


I'll try to save another whole novel on the subject but this is worth the read for charging a system when everything is ready and perfect and still a long read and incomplete lacking details for each layout of a system.

Pretty much you need to be making cool air at vents in very short order or oil isn't moving around the loop for compressor that should have be pre spun with oil prior to even installation for the first engagement not always well instructed or at all with info that should come with a replacement one, state of oil in one already or not and what would void warranty.


What do you want to do? It's just not DIY friendly work and among the worst things to try to save a buck on doing it yourself,

No, that will not work. This car uses a bypass type condenser which means it can be 90% clogged and still be able to blow through it. The air is simply going through the couple of tubes that are clear and the rest of the condenser is not even being used.

ALWAYS replace the condenser when the compressor has an internal failure.


Also: This is a 2 speed fan system and you have to make sure both speeds are working.
